The search for Sarah McLeod - A new beginning

Post by Peter »

Montreal, May 28, 2012
Hello to all, My name is Peter Bee, I live in Montreal, Canada Email snoman(at)aei.ca

Our mother died birthing my brother, in Toronto, back in 1933. Our father placed us for adoption, and disappeared. Brother and I were reunited in1998. We became interested in our family tree about 12. years ago; and have been quite successful (read lucky) in getting much of the missing events in place.

We have completed our father's Milliken family lineage back to the late 1700s. And for the last couple of years have been concentrating on mother's family.

We have known the names of her parents for some time, however have been unable to confirm their marriage or their origins; from various sources (Census, Birth certs, etc.) we have been following two families.

Our G'parents- Mothers family-
G'Pa: Edward George Hodgson, b. Angelsey, Wales d. Bootle 1905
G'Ma: nee Sarah McLeod, Married, b. Scotland, d. ?

It has turned out that we had G'Pa correct, however we have been following a wrong McLeod family.(from Skye)
We have very recently acquired proof of their marriage, therefor we are at a new plateau from which to start anew.

The earliest confirmed info we have, the 1901 census [Bootle cum Linacre (Liverpool area)] G'ma (Sarah Hodgson nee McLeod ) reported her age as being 30, and b. Scotland.

From recent Marriage Cert. Feb 06, 1900, Halifax N.S. G'ma gave the info that she was aged 28 , b. Scotland, plus the fact that she was a widow. She also reported her complete name as being Sarah, McVain*, McNab, McLellan*, McLeod (*=spelling?)
and her parents as Archibald ? And Margaret Ann ?

The two areas of our interest:
1 Sarah's family origins
2 Sarah after husband's death, in Bootle< 1905, with 2 children (re-marriage, relocation, death ?)

McLeod is a fairly common Scottish family name/Clan, however G'ma's complete name (if correct), I suspect is unusual, and perhaps someone may have come across a similar naming convention in their McLeod research.

We welcome any tips, suggestions, directions etc. and thank you for your interest
Have a great day. Thank you

Maybe it is too early in the day for my grey cells, but if Sarah married in Halifax in 1900, who is the Sarah in the 1901 census in Bootle, Lancashire? Or is 1900 a typo?

And where/when did Edward George Hodgson and Sarah McLeod marry?

Thanks for that Louis. Must say hadn't occured to me that a sailor from Anglesey and a girl from Scotland would marry in Halifax, NS.

Now for Peter:
RE:

1 Sarah's family origins
2 Sarah after husband's death, in Bootle< 1905, with 2 children (re-marriage, relocation, death ?
We have the name of one of their children:
HODGSON, Margaret Elizabeth M
Registration district: West Derby, Lancashire
Year/qtr of registration: 1900 / Jul-Aug-Sep
Volume no: 8B; Page no: 355.

Please name the child born later with year and where born. Do you have birth certs for both children and if yes what did Sarah give as her maiden name?

Hello Peter,
Maybe I missed it but do you know when and where Sarah Hodgson died?

Assuming she didn't remarry, this is the only matching death in Lancashire up to 1945:
HODGSON, Sarah
Registration district: West Derby, Lancashire
Year/qtr of registration: 1921 / Oct-Nov-Dec
Age at death: 50
Volume no: 8B; Page no: 552.

.... and then return to Bootle so soon afterwards .....

It's a very short space of time, do you have them on any incoming passenger lists?

Looking at www.lancashirebmd.org.uk under South Sefton (Bootle is now in that registration district) There are these 2 births with mother's maiden name as Mcleod

Margaret Elizabeth M Hodgson 1900 Bootle sub disrict mother's maiden name McLeod

Sarah McCallum Hodgson 1905 Bootle sub district mother's maiden name McCleod

Are these the correct children?

There seems no sign of the family after Edward's death. Do you have his death certificate?

Having done a bit of gogling it seems you have the names of the 2 children, their birth certificates and Edward's death certifictae.

Who register's Edward's death?

On the children's birth certificates does it give Sara as Sarah Hodgons formerly ?????? previously McLeod? If yes what names are given.

Have you seen the actual marriage entry and if yes exactly what does it say are her names?

Having seen that the second child's name was McCallum I wondered if that was the name on the marriage so I googled sarah McVain McNab McCallum McLeod and it immediately came up with did I mean Sarah McBane, McNab McCallum McLeod and gave a hit on a site called something to do with Canadian Pioneers which I couldn't open.

That set me thinking maybe Sarah was born in Scotland but emigrated at an early age to Canada and Edward met her in Canada. As she was a widow that could mean her first marage was in Canada. Have you checked for that? How about shipping lists from Scotland to Canada with Sarah as the child of Archibald and mary Ann McLeod?

Thanks for the second child's name Hilary. There's a 24 year old Sarah leaving for Canada [as a future permanent resident]. Right age.

Sarah HODGSON
Date of departure: 24 May 1929
Port of departure: Glasgow
Passenger destination: Quebec, Canada
Ship: MINNEDOSA.

Date of Birth: 1905 (calculated from age)
Age: 24
Marital status:
Occupation: Domestic
Last address in the UK: Ormidale, Bearsden.

Wonder if the widowed Sarah went to Scotland after Edward died?

Folks, sorry for delay, have problem attaching forms you requested, will be posted by MaryA separate

Wow people, I am overwhelmed by your response(s). Thank you. I attempted to disclose only pertinent factual information (Confirmed hard copy is available) but I must have not presented it well. I will try to answer all queries in order.

1.. To MaryA - I will post the record (2 parts) either separate or at end, after I figure out your lead.
-------------------------------
2.. To Dickeysam - My cells are more white than grey, & I do have senior moments.
1901 census is our G'ma.with our auntie Margaret (born in 1900). - our Mom was born 1905, one/two months before her father (our G'pa) died.. both indicating G'ma as Sarah Hodgson/McLeod. This info we have had for some time, but were unable to officially connect the two, and strongly suspected that they were living ‘in sin' ? We had worked backwards from the 1901 Bootle census and determined that there was only one Sarah McLeod that fit the time line- a McLeod family we followed from Skye to Greenock-a marriage to a Hamilton, 2-3 children then disappearance on the 1901 Greenock Census
this along with the appearance of Sarah on the 1901 Bootle census. It looked as if she had skipped out on the Greenock family.
We knew G'pa's name, and took a guess that he came from Anglesey in Wales, however could not confirm. until receipt of Halifax wedding, (He listed father and Mother as William and Elisah - Bingo!)
Answer your question -EGH and SMc married in Halifax, N.S. Canada on Feb 06, 1900
_____________________________
3.. Louis -Thank you for your directions. On the document it is difficult to read some of the writing. (Hopefully attached)
______________________________
4.. Big g -Thanks for your contribution, appreciated- Two children, Margaret Elizabeth McCallum Hodgson, b. 1900 : Sarah(2) McCallum Hodgson, b. 1905 (Our Mom
d.Toronto, Canada -Dec. 1933)

______________________________
5.. dickiesam -Directions Noted and appreciated. Marg. E. M. (Aunt b.1900) : Sarah(2) our mom b. 1905, West Derby. Yes we have BC's , Maiden name =McLeod
________________________________
6.. dickiesam G'ma Sarah (1) we do not know where/when she died. Sarah(2) our Mom died in Toronto Canada-1933. - Your ref to 1921 death is worth looking into.Age 50 looks good. I will try to get a hard copy. This could be interesting, we know that auntie Margaret graduated as a nurse, class of 1930, from the Royal Infirmary Oldham, studied midwifery in Scotland for a year? Then moved on to Africa, where we lost her after 1954 in Natal. and our Mom arrived in Canada 1929, so we suspect that granny had died by then. 1921 Means our mom would have been approx. 16 (schooling? She could write)
___________________________
7.. MaryA - From. birth certs, Ed Geo, reports he was a ships steward in 1900, and a ship's butcher in 1905,(This sounds like a passenger ship??) His father reported to be a mariner ., we are trying to associate Ed Geo. with a ship or company, this would give us access to his sailor's pouch? Could also get him to Halifax. I tried to get ships in Halifax port, Ferb 06, 1900, no results as yet.
___________________________
8.. Education Officer Yes these are the correct children, both girls have the given name McCallum., Yes we have death cert. At 30 Hemans st, Bootle

9.. Edfucation Officer Hilary -
1. Ed's death - S. Hodgson , Widow
2., BCert's - S. Hodgson formerly McLeod
3,. both read "formerly McLeod"
4.. I Have seen copy of register , as reported - name= Sarah, McYain,* McNab, McLellan*, McLeod (* is iffy spelling)
I too googled ‘sarah McVain McNab McCallum McLeod' and got ‘Did you mean: sarah McMane McNab McCallum McLeod if you dig further to level 4 or 5 - all the Mc's are there.
An Interesting observation, both my brother and I have the given name ‘Charles'?
5. I agree with your suggestion of early emigration to Canada, I am trying to find the info here, but am having difficulty accessing the records. (It used to be quite simple, however things seem to have changed, will keep trying) More later.
------------------------------------
10.. dickiesam ...great find, That is our Mom Sarah(2) coming to Canada, first knowledge of ‘Ormidale, Beardsden??' will try to check out this new data. How about the 1911 Scottish Census???
________________________

11. MaryA - Located that could not get further
________________
I finally broke down and bought some credits at Scotlands People, and asked about "Sarah, Mc,Mc,Mc, McLeod" for birth info, also marriage re Archibald and Margaret Ann. no Luck.

People- super action for first day? Will now try to post the requested forms. Thanks a ton. Peter

He may have worked for many different shipping lines. You do not need to know which to try and find his seaman's information. There are 3 places this may be. In Newfoundland, in Southampton Archives and at the National Archives in Kew UK. There is some online at www.findmypast.co.uk (paying website).

Although they will give the names of ships he sailed on they give no inofrmation about family etc beyond a date and place of birth. This you could get by ordering his birth certificate.
