greenfeild orphanage
Hi I was just wondering if anyone here has heard or Greenfeild Orphanage in Billinge?
Hi and welcome to the forum.
A quick google has found the Billinge History Society Archive Section who I would expect to be the people who would know the most. Also the St Helens Connect site also has an online booklet about Billinge http://sthelens-connect.net/sitefiles/b ... istory.pdf mention is made in this of Greenfield Orphanage.
Googling finds a few mentions of this school - apparently an RC school, by others searching for information.

Re: greenfeild orphanage
Hi lollipop
I have registered on this site just today purely to respond to your query. I had been doing a google search for places in my past, Greenfields Orphanage being one of them. It was an orphange run by The Catholic Childrens Rescue Society and was staffed by nuns. It 'cared' for all ages of children in seperate age groups so families with various aged children would be split up and might not see each other at all, even though they were living under the same roof. it i s now a school run by Nugent Care.
it was not a happy or caring place to live and the nns were very cruel and vindictive. Sunday was visiting day for families but if you had mis-behaved you just didn't get to see your visitors, even if they had arrived to see you. Hope this has been helpful.

Hi and welcome to the forum.
I'm sorry to hear that you had a very sad time at the home, but thank you for coming to give us that little bit of background that we might not have found out about.
