George Henderson

Post by Mickyblue »

Hello
Further to my research into the Henderson family I have just found in the 1871 Census
(ref. RG10/3812) a GEORGE HENDERSON, right age and occupation to be the father of my WILLIAM GEORGE. However he is listed as the Nephew of the family listed in the Census. The head is a RICHARD SAUNDERS and his wife is SARAH (nee Jones). Their address is 81 Roscommon street, Everton, Liverpool. Is there any way of finding out whether GEORGE HENDERSON is the Nephew to RICHARD or SARAH, in which case I may find George's parents. Any help gratefully received.

Hi,
That family are at 87 Roscommon Street, not 81. It's the enumerator's heavy down-strokes that make it look like 81, but by checking either side it is definitely 87.

Regarding the nephews, I would expect George to be a nephew of Richard because they are both born in Scotland. Possibly he is the son of a sister to Richard. The other nephew is probably related to Sarah since her maiden name was Jones. If you have George's marriage cert you will know his father's name and occupation and have a good chance of locating him in a census. With his father's name you should be able to find his birth in Scotland.

Similarly you have to back-track Richard Saunders to Scotland to find any possible link.

Found Richard Saunders in 1861:
SAUNDERS, Richard - Head - Married - 31 - 1830 - Manufacturer's clerk - Scotland.
SAUNDERS, Sarah - Wife - 24 - 1837 - Warrington, Lancashire.
Address: 9 Wentworth Street, Everton, Liverpool
RG09 - Piece: 2715 - Folio: 92 - Page: 44

And I think this may be him in 1851. He is in Warrington where his future wife Sarah Jones comes from.
SAUNDERS, Richard - Assistant - u/m - 21 - 1830 - Grocer - Scotland.
Address: Bridge Street, Warrington, Lancashire.
Piece: 2203 - Folio: 111 - Page: 43

Hello,

Keeping with the assumption that George is related on the Saunders side, FamilySearch has the following baptism for a George Henderson with mother's maiden Sanders:

Birth: 12 Feb 1851, Lochmaben, Dumfries
Parents: John Henderson & Rebecca Sanders

It also has the following baptisms:

Rebecca Sanders
Birth 9 Jan 1823, Mouswald, Dumfries - parents John Sanders and Isabella Nicholson

Richard Sanders
Baptism/Christening 31 Jul 1829, Dalton, Dumfries - parents John Sanders and Isabella Nicholson

So it looks like George was the son of Richard Saunders' sister Rebecca and her husband John Sanderson.

In the 1851 census, John and Rebecca are living with his family in Dumfries:
http://www.dgcommunity.net/historicalin ... ensus.aspx

Address: Village of Hightae
Parish: Lochmaben
Household No: 4A/94

John Henderson, Head, Married, Joiner, age 64
Jean Henderson, Wife, Married, age 61
George Henderson, Son, Unmarried, Joiner, age 41
John Henderson, Son, Married, Joiner, age 33
Rebecca Henderson, daughter in law, Married, age 27
George Henderson, Grandson, age 2 mths
Janet Henderson, Granddaughter, Scholar, age 9
William Henderson, Son, Unmarried, Joiner, age 20
