Burial or Cremation Records

Margaret Dorothy Shennan 1905 - 1905

I have found that my maternal Grandfather would have had a sister Margaret Dorothy Shennan but she died as a young infant. I have her death certificate indicating that she died at home , 81 Caulfeld Street, West Derby on 22 January 1905 but I have been unable to find any record of her burial or cremation.

Could anyone offer an advice as to this information please.

Where have you looked already?

I would suggest if you haven't already done it that you need to check all the possible cemeteries nearest her home. Their registers are on film at Liverpool Record Office.

Thanks. I have checked through these records without any success ... I suppose it is possible I might have missed it.

Are these records thought to be complete ?

I don't know if this office will be able to help you, they told me where my Grandmother was buried but I cann't remember if I knew which cemetery she was in or not, but it's worth a try.
I know I told them the date of her death

It's unlikely the council cemeteries office will have access to records for 1905 they are more likely to be in the record office. Also in order to request a look-up for later burials you need to give them the name, date of death and cemetery location. A general search of various cemeteries would involve a fee. Can you tell us which cemetery records you have searched?

I was not sure which would have been their local cemetary ... Caulfield Road West Derby ... but looked in West Derby Parochial, Everton and Kirkdale cemetary records at the Record Office.

Have you tried finding were the grandparents or parents are buried? It may be that the child is with them. If the family came from elsewhere there may be a grave there that the baby was taken to.

My other thought is how old was she when she died? My mother's brother brother died at 3 hours of "compression of the head during birth". He apears to have been removed by a person unknown and has no known burial.

I have heard stories that if the family was very poor an understanding undertaker might pop the baby in with an adult they were burying and no record would exist. I have no idea whether this is true.

My thoughts when I read your post were the same as Hilary's. Sometimes a small coffin would be buried in a little niche to the side of one, but we have on so many occasions heard of this and no records appear to have been kept, maybe because no charge was made.

I'm afraid the advice given by Blue about checking with Allerton Lodge is I believe, correct, they charge (unless it has gone up) £10 per year, per cemetery to make a search.

I very much regret that you might have a fruitless search for this burial, so sad.

How about trying Anfield? Last year when I was in touch with the cemeteries office about Anfield burials they told me records before 1913 were in the record office so 1905 will definitely be at the record office.

Thank you for the suggestions. I will take a look at the Anfield records.

The infant was only 6 days old so perhaps there is no record. The comment about infant deaths is very helpful and something I had not thought about. It would have been nice to have known where the child was buried.

The family came from Carlisle so perhaps she was buried with another relative up there and will enquire.
