Joesph Kellett Smith

Post by annron »

I am trying to find the burial ground for Joseph Kellett Smith. Joseph Kellett Smith of "Hillview", West Kirby, Cheshire, died 29 October 1905 he was a surgeon. Mary would you be kind enough to search Gibson's for me please. He was the nephew of my 2 x gg William Chippendale and he took over the surgery in Russell St after William's death. I would certainly think that he would have a headstone as he was quite a wealthy man at the time of his death. I haven't got the death cert so I don't know who registered the death but his wife Lily was still living at the time of his death and probate was granted to his son Joseph Stanley Kellett Smith. Kellett was at the time of his baptism a christian name but by the time he died he was using it as a surname Kellet-Smith.

Thanks
Chris

I'm sorry that Gibsons Epitaphs finish in 1882.

Do you have the death index? as he lived on the Wirral was he buried over there rather than in Liverpool?

As he died in West kirkby which was then in Cheshire I would suggest he is likely to have been buried locally. The local council is Wirral Borough council. There is a cemetery in West Kirkby. Hopefully this

www.wirral.gov.uk › ... › Deaths, cemeteries and crematoria

Will take you to the correct page of the council website and gives an email address you can contact. You have a the actual date of feath so they may be willing to have a look for you.

If the link doesn't work google West Kirkby cemetery and do it from there - that's how I found it.

Mary I have looked for the death index but been unsuccessful, I got his death from the probate record and a record from the medical journal.

Joseph Kellet Smith's death registration shows on http://www.cheshirebmd.org.uk as
Smith, Joseph Kellet 69 registed in the sub district of Woodchurch in the registration district of Wirral in 1905.

I found it by looking at other Joseph Smith's and then at the actual images for the GRO index

Smith, Joseph Kellet 69 Dec Quarter Wirral Reg district vol 8a page 266

Hmmm Woodchurch ..... that would make me think of a burial place nearer Birkenhead than West Kirby.

We have a list of cemeteries on the Wirral here
http://www.forum.liverpool-genealogy.or ... ral#p75432

Although Landican wasn't open at the time you are interested in, I believe they hold most of the records there. Flaybrick or Rake Lane might be the place.

I have now found an article regarding the interment and it took place at West Kirkby Parish Church on 29/10.1905, I have emailed Cheshire Archives so here's hoping they will be able to help.

Off Topic, someone on rootschat was asking for help regarding St Peter's Church, Liverpool so I advised them to post here and it seems I have upset some people on that forum, didn't mean to just trying to be helpful!!

Thanks for all your help.

The Family History Society of Cheshire has produced a microfiche of the Monumental Inscriptions for St Bridget's Church West Kirby (the parish church). It's listed on their website for purchase. A local library may have a copy and may be willing to do a look up.

Thanks Hilary, I have emailed the church this morning to see if the burial record is there as Cheshire Archives have directed me to them saying the grave and burial records are still with the church. I will take a look at the Cheshire FH Website.

You know he's in the graveyard, it's very likely he has a gravestone so maybe a day out to West Kirkby is called for. It's a nice place to visit. You never know you might find other family members in the graveyard. I've spent hours quartering graveyards looking for family members. Gravestones can be very informative.

Yes Hilary, will wait until this cold weather moves on, I also like to go around graveyards and look at headstones, I have sent many a happy hour touring my local graveyards trying to find my ancestors graves.
