Reseaarching Charles Wilson born 1836 in New York.

Census for 1881 indicates he is a British Subject and a Mariner.

His marriage certificate of 1864 states he was married in Liverpool and his father was James Wilson, farmer.

Believed to have extended family in Liverpool or possibly Scotland.

Trying to locate information previous to 1871 census regarding Charles Wilson.

From the 1881 Census I believe Charles married Jane Bagnall?
Marriage: WILSON, Charles
Registration District: Liverpool
Year of Registration: 1864; Quarter: Jan-Feb-Mar
Volume No: 8B; Page No: 385

Incidentally he is recorded in 1881 as being a Dock labourer.
Piece: 3600 - Folio: 6 - Page: 10.

Here he is in 1871:
WILSON, Charles - Head - 35 - Mariner - United States, New York.
WILSON, Jane - Wife - 24 - Lancashire, Liverpool.
WILSON, Mary J - Dtr - 5 - Lancashire, " "
WILSON, Hariet E - Dtr - 2 - Lancashire, " "
WILSON, Sarah A - Dtr - 0 - Lancashire, " "
Address: 115 Lime Kiln Lane, Liverpool.
Piece:3759 - Folio: 40 - Page: 11.

It would appear he has not yet become a British Citizen, so prior to his marriage it will be very difficult to find him in an earlier UK census.

All the information you have given is correct, and his wife is jane bagnall. He was a mariner when he married and just before his death he worked on the docks.

I am certain he had family in the u.k. because he had only one son and when he married a james wilson was his best man. We have spent many years trying to find out more about Charle's background.

Have you found his citizenship/naturalisation papers in the National Archives?

With no address on the marriage certificate to give a hint as to who James Wilson was, he may well have been a brother but still a US citizen, even a mariner [of no fixed abode]. Have you found Charles' birth and parents in a US Census?
