I am trying to trace my grandfather's family roots. My grandfather was Robert Thomas Cooper who was born 05/09/1888 in Wigan.
I have traced his family back to Nancy Cooper of Westleigh who was baptised on 11/05/1782 at St Mary the Virgin in Leigh.
Her father was Thomas Cooper and there is a record of Thomas Cooper marrying Doris Ashton at St Mary the Virgin in Leigh on 13/05/1770. However there are no records of him being baptised in Leigh.
There are records of Thomas Coopers being baptised locally in the relevant years (11/03/1744 in the Astley Chapel Register, 24/04/1748 in the Houghton Winwick register and 09/06/1745 in the Newton Kenyon - Culceth Register).
Does any member have further information on this branch of the Cooper family or thought on how to proceed further please ?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi and welcome to the forum. I think you need to investigate other sources now, such as Wills which may name other family members and places. I wondered if any other Coopers were married around that date in the same Parish, to give a clue but since there aren't it does seem likely that your Thomas wasn't born/living in Leigh.
The Lancashire Online Parish Clerk site has a slightly different entry for the marriage:
Marriage: 13 May 1770 St Mary the Virgin, Leigh, Lancashire, England
Thomas Cooper - (X), of Leigh Parish, Pennington
Dorothy Ashton - of Leigh Parish, Pennington
Witness: William Darwell; Edward Mather
Banns Read: 29 Apr 1770, 2nd: 6 May 1770, 3rd: 13 May 1770
Married by Banns by: Wm. Parry, Curate
