St Winifreds in Bootle

Post by IDIFER »

Hello all. I need a bit of help - mainly because I am in the south and too far to have a look. My Grandmother was Christina DOHERTY b. 1894 she married Christopher SMITH at St WINIFRED's church in Bootle but I dont seem to be able to find out anything further which would give me sufficient info. to obtain a marriage certificate. My mother was born in 1917 when they were living at 41 Seaforth st. in Bootle. Any info. really would be a boost to me at this stage.
Regards to all. Chris McK.

Did your grandparents' names come from your mother's birth certificate? If not where have they come from? Did your mother have any siblings? If yes when were any older than your mother born?

Sorry for all the questions but I've had no luck yet with a marriage.

Christina Doherty...?

Post by dickiesam »

Hi Chris,
Looks like one of those common mis-spellings of a surname.. Probably because the name was pronounced Dough-ear-tee instead of Do [as in dog] - heh-tee. Certainly worth taking a shot at the cert to confirm it.

Marriages Jun 1913 - W. Derby - 8b - 865: Dougherty, Christina and Smith, Christopher J.

Having failed in a search up to 1945 using Doherty, that was the only match using a wildcards search and these were the Smith nee Doherty births up to 1920.

SMITH, Mary J - Lancashire, West Derby - 1913.
SMITH, Margaret - Lancashire, West Derby - 1917.
SMITH, Christina - Lancashire, West Derby - 1919.

Doherty etc

I think this may be where the confusion over the name spelling comes from.

Fairly sure this is Jane with her daughter Rose in 1881...
DOGHERTY, John - Head - Married - 34 - General Labourer - Ireland.
DOGHERTY, Jane - Wife - 28 - Liverpool [Note: this changes to Birkenhead, Cheshire in later censuses]
DOGHERTY, Rose - Dtr - 4 - Bootle.
DOGHERTY, John - Son - 0 - Bootle.
Address: 24 Seaforth St, Bootle Cum Linacre, Lancashire.

To confirm the find by Dickiesam, LancsBMD site has the marriage, spellings the same, taking place "West Derby, Register Office or Registrar Attended" which probably means an RC church, which St Winifreds in Bootle is.

Your best bet would be to order the certificate online at www.gro.gov.uk using the reference DS gave above.
