Is anyone able to look in the deaths at sea lists for a J. D. Clarke, possibly listed as a chief steward, who is believed to have lost his life when the Booth Line ship Basil sank after collision in the English Channel on 11 Nov 1917 ?
Many thanks

Deaths at Sea 1917
J D Clarke
Hi Daggers,
This is the GRO index of deaths at sea for 1917 for the surname Clark(e). I also checked in the March qtr of 1918 but nothing there.

The J Clark entry in the GRO Index says Port Nicholson, which I believe is not a ship but the port in New Zealand now called Wellington Harbour. I found this J D Clarke death on FreeBMD: Deaths Dec 1917: Clarke, John D - 30 - Southampton - 2c - 28.

According to www.wrecksite.eu the Basil was carrying ammunition from Southampton to Boulogne when the collision occurred. The site does not give any casualities.
I can't see the gentleman on www.cwgc.org so perhaps he died before the ship left Southampton. The death in Southampton sounds probable.

I found to my shame that I posted the same enquiry some months ago, but this time there is a possible result: the JD Clark whose death was registered in Southampton might be the one.
He is in a church's WW1 book of remembrance but not on its wall panel, and the entry names the ship as 'HMS Basil' which was never a warship.
Thanks for helping.
