1938 Liverpool Directory - Margaret Goldring - Fried fish dealer 47 Brookhill Road Bootle.
Does anybody out there perhaps remember this (I know it's a long shot) or have photos of the shop/street at this time or around this time.... I know it's a shot in the dark, but miracles have been know to happen.
I know it's still there but the original buildings flattened and a residential care home for the elderly is built there with new housing around it.

My Mum was born in 1930 at 57 Brookhill Road and lived there many years. She remembers the fish and chip shop and Margaret Goldring. Mum's grandmother Sarah Woodworth lived in one of the rooms above the shop so Mum would visit her most days. The thing she remembers the most are the cockroaches in her grandmother's room! Unfortunately Mum doesn't have any photos of the shop.
Is there anything particular you want to know about Margaret Goldring? I can always ask my Mum and see if she can remember.
Thank you so much!!! I actually know very little about Margaret other than she's buried in Bootle cemetery in an unmarked grave - she was the 2nd wife of my great-grandfather, the step-mother of my granddad - sadly I knew neither of them................. even my mum never knew her step-grandmother so we know nothing about what she was even like or looked like...................... my grandfather never spoke about her. If your mum can remember ANYTHING about her it would be very interesting to know as to us she is just a name sadly. Thank you so much for this, it's fabulous to find out something about her................... possibly need to order her death certificate to find out who notified her death as with it being an unmarked grave i'm presuming there was no family left/in touch with her when she died.
Thank you
Lis

Sefton Local History doesn't have its photos on line - you woud have to contact them and ask if they had a photo of the street/place you want and then they would send it. There would probably be a small charge.

Spoke to my Mum today. She only remembers a few things about Mrs Goldring. She remembers that she was quite a large lady. She never seemed to have any staff helping in the chip shop-it was just her. She used to cook normal chips but she also used to fry small potatos which Mum said were delicious-she never had them before and she hasn't had them since. It was like Mrs Goldring's "speciality."
Mrs Goldring lived a few doors away in an identical house to my Mum's. It had a front room (where Mrs Goldring had her chip shop, a kitchen at the back and 3 bedrooms upstairs(I assume also a bathroom). Mum's grandmother rented one of the bedrooms from Mrs Goldring. I thought my Mum lived on Brookhilll Street until she was in her late teens but I'd forgotten that she was evacuated in 1939. Sorry she can't remember any more than this.

What do I say - this lady has become a real person thanks to you and your mum!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH................... I'm amazed this is the first information I have concerning her - no matter how small the info, this is great - PLEASE THANK YOU YOUR MUM........ this really fills a gap in my family history. The only reason I knew about the chip shop was due to another very kind person letting me know. I visited Toxteth cemetery last year and found my great-grandmother and great uncle and by chance visited Bootle for other family members and a very kind man at Bootle cemetery gave me the details for Margaret Goldring who was also buried there but sadly with no marked grave! My daughter and I cleaned the graves at Bootle but sadly, due to a lack of a headstone, we could not do anything for her other than say "hello". Living, as we do abroad, visits to Liverpool are very precious and any information is VERY much appreciated. We normally get 1 visit a year and my children, all young, have now grown to appreciate the visits to graveyards/stones - information about your history are so important. I am only sorry that my mother knew nothing about this lady, having died in 1966, she actually died after my birth, from what we can make out, with no family around her. Death certificate a must now to see who notified the death! Thank you!
