Typical of my luck to discover I might have formerly rich ancestors!

Does the narrative below mirror anybody else’s experience?

In a previous post above I said I would try to contact someone via Genes Reunited who appeared to have the same Isaac Timperley in her family tree as the one I am descended from, to clarify his date of birth, as we had significantly different years.

I discovered that although you can search for people who appears in someone’s tree, to actually send a message to the creator of the tree you have to subscribe to Genes Reunited. So I forked out circa £15 for 6 months subscription and sent a message to the afore mentioned tree owner saying that I would be interested to know why she believed Isaac Timperley was born in 1790 as my own research indicated he was possibly born in the 1770’s, and detailed my reasons for this.

At the same time I found that another subscriber had Isaac Tympany on his tree (if you are still reading this (!), see my previous posts for my thoughts on Isaac Timperley perhaps being Isaac Tympany). So I sent a message to this subscriber asking whether, in his research, he had come across any information about Isaac Tympany which might prove or disprove my theory that he was the Isaac Timperley? i.e. that he had found a marriage for Isaac Tympany, or a record of Isaac’s death?

I sat back and eagerly awaited the replies, but I have been sorely disappointed. It is possible to see on the Genes Reunited website that both messages have been opened (and presumably read), yet neither person has bothered to reply. Why not? Why does someone go to the trouble of creating a tree for all to see, and presumably to thereby seek information from others, and then not bother to take part in this process? I could understand this if the messages had gone unread, but obviously they are still subscribers as the messages have been read. (I did contact Genes Reunited to ask if people could read their messages without having a subscription, but got a reply saying they could not tell me which individual people had subscriptions, which was not the question I asked.)

I suppose I’m no worst off (apart from being £15 poorer!), but I am slightly disillusioned by the experience.

Unfortunately it's an experience I've had a few times and not only on Anc***. I think people must lose interest. Can't think why - I'm addicted! I agree that it's very frustrating but there's no way you can force someone to answer. Let's hope another link will turn up.
Keep trying

I have a tree on Genes Reunited but I can't message people because I'm a free member. I've had people message me and ask for access to my tree. What I do is before giving them access to my tree I put a note in one of the records on my tree that they are interested in telling them I can't message them but if they would like to share notes to e-mail me.

Really sympathise Tex :( I've had this a few times, and more often it has been someone who has contacted me, rather than the other way around :?

I have made sure that they are knowledgeable enough for me to be certain that we are related.. and often relatively closely... and then I have sent info to them, including photo's.. being assured that they will reciprocate... what's happened then? absolutely zilch! nothing :( so frustrating :x

Another annoying incidence for me was when I visited the colliery where my great grandfather worked until he was fataly injured. I spoke to the new owner who kindly let me look into the main building that was still standing. He was interested in why I was there, so I told him. He said that he had all sorts of information regarding the colliery at the time it was working, staff lists, photo',s account books etc . I told him I had a newspaper article about my great grandfather's accident at the colliery. He seemed very interested in this as he was interested in any history to do with the colliery. He gave me his email and said ' if you send me the article, then I will send you information back in return'. Obviously I was very keen.

Upon my return I sent the email with the newspaper article. What did I get back?
A quick thank you and, 'Oh well these things happened in those times' but did he send me any info in return?.. no he didn't.. and no mention of it in the email either :(

very confusing and frustrating if you ask me

It's a shame but I am learning to be very selective now...

Chin up...

I always try to give something back to the contacts with shared ancestry who have helped me. Even if you don't have access to certain information it's good manners to correspond and show appreciation for others' work. I have a few contacts who do their bit and a few who take a back seat and mostly receive stuff. It's annoying when it comes to certificates if you are the one sending copies to other people and they don't offer to contribute towards the cost.

It’s sad to hear that I’m not the only one to have encountered this sort of problem, thanks for all your replies.

However, having read Blue70’s post above where he states that he is a free member of Genes Reunited but can still receive messages (but not reply), perhaps I have also tried to contact two free members. So, in case this is the situation, I am going to have one more try, and will send both of them a message again along with a “spare” e-mail address of mine in the hope that that might get me a reply.

Hi Tex T

I have just done a search of Genes Reunited for 'Holly Crowley' and I had five hit.

All were for Holly Crowley b1973 Liverpool.

Interesting but maybe of no use whatsoever.

Regards

I think many of us have had similar experiences on either GR or Ancestry. It's a good idea to always include an email address just in case, but I'm glad that most members on this forum at least have the good manners to reply when contacted.

Sorry I sent you on a "wild goose chase" regarding contacting Holly Crowley on Genes Reunited. I have had mixed responses myself, some like yours, but conversely one person I contacted, regarding my Welsh relatives, sent me a cd which included photos and a lot of information which I found invaluable. Likewise, you have provided me with some very interesting information regarding the Timperleys.

Regards,

Les Fifoot.
