well dickiesam found the death records for the father and located a son I knew nothing about. and in doing some more trawling for the surviving daughters I find Mary on a tree on Ancestry, and it is new, so I post a message off right away and get a reply...its Mary's daughter and she is in her 80's, I've sent her the info I have on Mary's family and am waiting a reply. I am hoping she will allow me to have a copy of Mary's christening cert as she told me she has it and that her mother was born at sea. seems like I have found 9 more people for this family.

Well done Susan, that's a great result! Were they surprised to get a response from Oklahoma? that must have been a turn up for the books for them as well as for you. Fingers crossed she sends you a copy of the Cert, I wonder whether there was a birth registration anywhere - another country maybe.

I checked on A2A and they have ships records of bmd's starting in 1857 but I will need to email them and see if they can do a lookup for Mary's birth. unless you know anyone who is going to Kew soon.

The births at sea index from 1854-1890 is on Find my Past. No Balsillie or variants found.

I don't know of anybody making any plans, but you just never know do you, so I've changed the heading of your post in the hopes it will be eye-catching just in case.

JUST HEARD BACK.....we are definately talking about the same family.... she never knew that phoebe had a name other than Cissy. she has mailed me a copy of the christening record with translation, I am waiting with baited breath for its arrival.... she has offered to write down all her memories of the family, which I am taking her up on, and she also has a number of photos that she is willing to share with me if some one can scan them for her and send them to me.... I will see where she lives and try to find someone with a scanner who is willing to help. records, pictures, firsthand memories how could I get so lucky after so long hunting them all down and you all helped me sort them out finding recs I did not have access to.

YIPPEE!!! :D

thanks Mary...... it takes her a few days to answer but then again she is in her 80's....... she sounds like a real dear from her emails, I'm going to scan down everything she sends me......she has given me some lovely clues to John and Phoebe's life in Brazil..... she stated that one of the photo's was of a grave marker which her mother said was of her fathers first mate, marker reads 2nd engineer SS Cavour and that it was from the Royal Mail Lines, doing some digging I was able to find out where the ship was made and by whom and why it was made I am going to email her today with the info....it is so exciting to finally get something on this bunch.... I also found out the reason I have not been able to find Josiah and Phoebe (daughter of J & P)Unsworth is because he couldn't keep a job and they shifted from place to place, Liverpool then Manchester and finally London were they met a sticky end apparently, I can't wait to hear that story. but it gives me somewhere to look. They also had one child and so now I will try to find his info now that I have a name.

Hi Susan,
What a breakthrough! Great to see an original document, even if it is a scan.
Instead of the usual can of worms you have opened a box of goodies!
Brilliant, makes all the trawls worthwhile.
Cheers,

well here they are the death certs for john Balsillie and the one for John Major Balsillie, they died within a few days of each other. unfortunately they do not tell us anything about the death other than the persons name, age and date of death and who reported it. it looks as though I will have to try and find his birth record. now that I have a rough date of birth. sent them on to Phyllis waiting to hear back from her.
