Really brilliant information thank you every so much for the info on the latest census especially! I am on a big learning curve with this. My relative is one of Hubert/Herberts sons. Don't want to be too specific as he is a living relative.

I know that Cuthbert had my Gran who died aged 35, and that Austin never married or had children. The others I don't know, but will persue the marriages as best I can. All help really gratefully recieved, thank you so much :)

Hi Trix,
I understand it is this marriage you do not want followed up as it concerns your friend...

Marriages Mar 1918 - W. Derby - 8b - 649 - Garland, Hubert and Thomas, Susannah.
His forename is definitely Hubert, I checked the birth details.

Using the BT Phone Book you will find that there are two Garlands registered, why not drop them a line and ask. (actually if you use 192.com there are six entries with telephone numbers and addresses).

A short letter with some brief information as to who your grandparents were and I would suggest that you enclose a stamped addressed envelope for them to reply and you never know what you might turn up.

I don't know about other people but my suggestion would be to write rather than telephone out of the blue, I think they might be more receptive, people are very wary these days when accepting telephone calls.

Their grandfather was called Charles Verschoyle Garland. I googled the name Verschoyle as it's unusual and what I found was most interesting!!

Anyway, he came from Dublin in Ireland and was born about 1823 or 1821. Could someone please advise on the best place to look to find his birth parents, as i have no experience with searching in Ireland?

many thanks
