Everton slum clearances.
Everton slum clearances.
In perusing one item on this board I came across the above as an explanation for the disappearance of a street. Could anyone direct me to more detailed information about this. Much appreciated...Lorraine Daly.
Hi Lorraine
Many of the streets where cleared and many people rellocated, including my great aunts from Aubrey Street, Everton.
This link may explain a bit for you

The "Lost Tribe of Everton & Scottie Road" reflects on the 50th anniversary of the point of no return being reached around the City Council's decision, in 1960, to send in the bulldozers and wipe out some of the most historic inner city districts of Liverpool.
This led to an exodus of over 125,000 people to estates on the outer limits of Merseyside.

Street disappearances...
And don't forget that Hitler did his bit during the WW2 Blitz. The houses and shops etc disappeared while only the street name remained. This is plain to see in the collection of Liverpool photographs recently posted. All those late 1940s, 1950s and even up to the 60s, shots of city areas which were just wide-open spaces with loads of 'car-parking' spaces, where once had been bustling shops and communities. http://www.watcha.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/

Everton slum clearances.
Thank you all very much for the replies. I particularly enjoyed the photos, and will purchase that book. Sometimes it is hard to imagine what a city was like before demolition of some areas.
