ACCIDENTS SUGAR REFINARY AROUND 1890'S

Post by Marie »

My mother, born 1905, always told me that her grandfather John O'Brien was killed in an accident at the Sugar Refinery he is in the 1891 census as "Labour in Sugar Refinery living at 46 Ainsworth St. In 1891 he is listed as a General Labourer and lived in Edward St. He was married to Mary and had two daughters Elizabeth and Mary in 1881 he had a son Thomas who also died in an accident either a fire or run over by a horse and cart. Is there anyway I can confirm if these stories are true? Any help appreciated.

To help with ages etc. the 1881 census gives the family as living in part of a house with a James and Eliza Daniels and their family, at 46 Ainsworth Street, Mount Pleasant
John O'Brian Head M 42 Labourer in Sugar Works Ireland
Mary Wife M 32 Lancs Liverpool
Thomas son 3 months " "
RG11; Piece: 3621; Folio: 21; Page: 4

In 1891 in part of 16 Edward Street, Mount Pleasant
John O'Brien Head M 45 General Labourer Ireland
Mary Wife M 34 Liverpool
Elizabeth daur 5 Scholar "
Mary A daur 10 " "
RG12; Piece: 2913; Folio 118; Page 32

So presumably the accident to Thomas would have occurred between 1881 and 1891, although the one to John would have been after 1891.

A death fits the child Q3 1884 Liverpool 8b 143 age 4. This death certificate will confirm the cause of death and also the exact date so that either the Coroner's Reports or the local newspapers can be checked.

John is a little more difficult, if you have the right family in both censuses, his ages are quite a bit out and so the nearest that could be guessed is that his birth could be somewhere between 1839 and 1846.

There would appear to be two possibles
Q3 1900 Liverpool 8b 120 age 62 or
Q2 1892 Liverpool 8b 87 age 52
