Stembridges

Post by Melliott001 »

I live in the USA. My grandmother, Ernestine Stembridge was born in Liverpool in the 1890s. Her mother's first husband died at sea. She married his brother, who sired Ernestine and her brother Reginald.

My grandmother and family emigrated to the US. She married my grandfather, Howard Elliott in 1920.

An older brother Henry (Harry) died at the Battle of Loos in 1915.

Any long lost relatives out there?

Welcome to our forum.

Are you just looking for relatives or do you need help finding the Stembridge family?

The best birth registration I can come up for Ernestine is

Mary Ernest Stembridge June Quarter 1893 West Derby Registration District ( This was an enormous district stretching many miles around the centre of Liverpool) volume 8b page 519

Stembridge family

Post by dickiesam »

Hello Mark and welcome,
Pending your reply to Hilary regarding relatives or family 'history' I had a quick look at in the 1891 census for Harry, who lost his life in WW1. Found this Liverpool family with a father Reginald and a young sibling of Harry's, Reginald. The names fit those in your post so I am wondering if you have Ernestine's birth cert with her parents' names, or her marriage cert with her father's name?

1891:
STEMBRIDGE, Reginald - Head - 31 - Tallow Chandler - Allington, Dorsetshire.
STEMBRIDGE, Mary Ellen - Wife - 36 - Assists In Shop - Edinburgh, Scotland.
STEMBRIDGE, Harry M - Son - 11 - Allington, Dorsetshire.
STEMBRIDGE, James R - Son - 7 - Walton on the Hill, Lancashire.
STEMBRIDGE, Edward K - Son - 4 - Walton on the Hill, Lancashire.
STEMBRIDGE, Reginald - Son - 1 - Egremont, Wallasey, Cheshire.
HEROITT, Elizabeth A - Servant - 18 - General Servant - Liverpool, Lancashire.
Address: 183 [Tallow Chandler Shop] County Road, Walton On The Hill, Lancashire.
Census RG12 / Piece:2979 / Folio:36 / Page:20.

And, oddly, this is the only marriage I can find [1875-1890] that even remotely fits. The name Steinbridge is shown in the GRO Index.
Marriages Dec 1888:
STEINBRIDGE, Mary Helen - W. Derby - 8b - 729.
STEINBRIDGE, Reginald - W. Derby - 8b - 729.
Given that you say Mary married her late spouse's brother it would account for the same surname for this couple. But, I am fairly sure the GRO Index spelling is incorrect! See here in the 1881 census, Mary and her first husband and family:

STEMBRIDGE, Edward F - Head - 30 - Mariner - Bridport, Dorset.
STEMBRIDGE, Mary Helen - Wife - 27 - Edinburgh, Scotland.
STEMBRIDGE, Helen Wilson - Dtr - 2 - 1879 - Edinburgh, Scotland.
STEMBRIDGE, Henry Miller - Son - 1 - Bridport, Dorset.
STEMBRIDGE, Reginald - Brother - Single - 20 - Commercial Clerk, Brass Founder - Bridport, Dorset.
BENSON, Martha - Servant - Single - 16 - Liverpool, Lancashire.
Address: 14 Thurnham Street, Walton On The Hill, Lancashire.
RG11 / Piece:3686 / Folio:20 / Page:34

There is a strong connection between the occupation of Tallow Chandler and seafaring. Although Tallow Chandlers are usually associated with candle-making, there were Tallow Chandlers in most seaports suppling Tallow, rope soaked in oil and covered in grease, to the shipping business. It had many uses on board ships and in dry dock, etc.

The marriage Brian found in 1888 took place at Kirkdale St Mary's church according to www.lancashirebmd.org.uk

PS the birth registration I found was for Mary Ernestine not Mary Ernest as I have written - sorry!

It would be interesting to see the actual entry to see whether the names were signed as STEINBRIDGE or STEMBRIDGE as the marriage appears as STEINBRIDGE on both the GRO index and lancashirebmd.

Was it legal at that time to marry your deceased brother's widow?

According to Scotlandspeople website

Edward Francis Stembridge married Mary Ellen Keppie in 1876 in the district of Newington Edinburgh

You would have to buy some credits on the site to see the actual entry I was just in the index and had 1 credit left!!
