Edward Clinker - Ada Thompson marriage 1862 - Liverpool

Post by DevonJon »

Hi
I wonder if anyone can help me.

The above got married at the Church of St Michael, Walton on the Hill, Liverpool, Lancashire. I have their 25 Aug 1862 wedding certificate. He is a surveyor of taxes.

I have extreme difficulty tracking Ada before this event. Though after her marriage she is readily found until death (1871 to 1901 inclusive) Ada marks down her birth place as Muncaster, Cumberland. Her age in each census always tallies with a birth in 1838.

The only other thing I know is upon her marriage her father was noted as Joseph Thompson , occupation 'Gentleman'. Also Ada puts her home address as 8 Perth Street, West Derby on the marriage certificate. I've address search on Findmypast and there's no no8 ! but I have looked at each of the 7 or so addresses on the street and no Thompson's or Clinkers. The witness are called Thorn and I think he works with Edward. So no family link.

Thus my issue is that before 1871 Ada does not appear to exist !!!! This has got me headed to Cumbrian postings. However I wondered if there was any hope of trying to locate whether their marriage was announced in a local paper?? I was hoping their may be a little extra info or family with them. I've tried Ancestry sources which were no help.

Is it just too early to expect that. I am way down SW so Liverpool is not a easy trip for hands on stuff.

Many thanks for any thoughts.

Jon

I can find no reference to a marriage announcement in The Liverpool Mercury. There are other Liverpool Papers which are not accessable at this time with the record office being closed.

Hi :D
I've sent an error report to Anc## for her birthplace in 1901 listed as Manchester instead of Muncaster.

Ada Thompson and Edward Clinker

Post by dickiesam »

Hello Jon,
Trying to work out where Ada and Edward might have met I found him in the 1861 here:
RG09 / Piece:2877 / Folio:25 / Page:44.
He is a Surveyor of Taxes and a boarder at 8 Sidney Street, Chorlton Upon Medlock, Manchester. Born Alton, Hampshire 1840. His job sounds like he works for the Revenue service [Customs and Excise].

Like you I am unable to find Ada's birth or herself in any pre-marriage census. So, I am wondering if she was registered with a different forename. The nearest registration district to Muncaster would appear to be Whitehaven.

Brian

EDIT: Just a thought! Because Ada described her father on her marriage cert as 'Gentleman' I doubt if he is in the 1861 census, and possibly 1851, as a labourer or a tradesman of some description. A landowner perhaps, a gentleman farmer with lots of acreage or 'living on own means'?

Hiya Jon....a little puzzled here...on www.lancashirebmd.org.uk it states
1862 the marriage took place at
TOXTETH PARK , ST MICHAELS ,2068TP/4/247
You say Walton on the Hill ?......Toxteth Park and Walton on the Hill are 5 miles apart....
on freebmd it says Edward Clinker married West Derby District 1862 in sep qtr.but ADA THOMPSON is not there...only Edwards name....could you please check these out and see if they conflict with your marriage cert please...something somewhere appears to be mistranscribed....allan

Hi Garstonite

The Marriage took place at St Michaels in the Hamlet Church Toxteth Park. Which came under the Parish of Walton on the hill. You will come across many marriage entries in Liverpool and surrounding districts which will say "The Parish of Walton on the Hill"

There are 3 brides & only 2 grooms.
I looked at the original entry & the page number reads

Hi Folks

Thanks for exchanges. I was simply stating what was on the marriage certificate as to location.

Its really good to know the right church ie: St Michaels in the Hamlet.

It does seem (though I'm no local) a little distance from where they were living at time of marriage (she - 8 Perth Street, West Derby ; he 14 Molyneux Street).

My hope was to see if any marriage details went into newspapers (and thus any hint at other relatives present - partic her side). The witnesses on certificate (Charles and Lavina Thorn) are not relatives - I think Charles has similar job and perhaps worked with Edward).

Having tried Brit Newspapers online to no positive outcome I suspect I may have to draw a blank at locating - if indeed it ever was announced.

Thanks for interest

Jon

It wasn't usual except for some of the high and mighties, although if you did fancy doing a search in the local newspapers that aren't presently online, I think you would need to wait a while until matters are more settled with the Record Office resources. Have you tried the Cumbria FHS Fourum at www.cumbriafhs.com they may be able to help.
Muncaster is the seat of the Duff-Pennington family at Muncaster Castle which is worth a visit.

Thank you - yes I have. Also found approaching Whitehaven Records people direct with lots of smiles has prompted a little hands on from them.

I am pretty certain now that the Thompsons at Muncaster were a line of Yeoman connected to the Brakinwall estate which is part of Muncaster Castle - Penningtons - wider estate.

After a few hours yesterday I mapped out all BMD from IGI for Muncaster thompsons. It finally made a little sense. Very clear Thompson seat just still suffering a little dotted line between how I connect my Adah to the Joseph Thompson Gentleman from Muncaster. One day!

Curious how lives interconnect. Just spent a little time this morning 'up the road' on my wifes Hughes - Blain family from Whitehaven.

Could help spot the Gerards bit of your forum name.

Her family have a line of Edward Gerard Hughes.

Obscure of there was a connection with you ??
