Children born in Walton Workhouse would have been baptised in the Chapel that was within the grounds of the Workhouse. I will try and find out who was the Roman Catholic Priest to Walton in 1893/94

Birth Records

Hi Katie
Just found your post - sadly it is not the right one. Mary Ann would have been 25 when daughter Mary was born. I am coming to the conclusion that either Mary wasn't registered or perhaps on this occasion she was registerd under her father's name who wasn't James Ruddy. Am I making sense.
One more question - is it possible to ask the GRO to do a search on the mothers name or will they only search on full details.

dickiesam - yes you are correct I came to the same conclusion and sent Ancestry a correction but all they did was to name all inhabitants Rooney/Welsh ??

Tina - Sorry forgot to repy to you - my apologies - 1881 - 1891 & 1901 cencus show James' birth place as Birkenhead - 1911 shows it as Neston Cheshire but when I found the 1871 cencus his birth place is shown as Ireland. This family history certainly makes your brains rattle ??

Again thank you all for giving your time to help
Yappie

Neston - horrors!!! the crew know my thoughts on that place having spent quite a lot of time and effort in an attempt to find my gt grandmother's birth/baptism record there. The very name of it sends shivers down my spine.

To answer your question, unfortunately the GRO will no longer do searches in the same manner that they used to, and I would suggest that you contact the local Register Office instead who are often be more sympathetic and helpful with their searches.

Just a thought

James Ruddys mother was called Julia Ruddy and Mary Welsh named her first child Julia Welsh. They lived in the same street too much of a coincidence to me. What do others think? might be worth a look in the West Derby Board of Guardian minutes to see if the daddy had to cough up maintenance.

Julia isn't the most common of names so it's quite likely.

Have you checked the National Archives too?

Hi Katie and Mary A

No I haven't gone down the routes you both suggested but will now and I will also contact the local birth records office and see if they can help.
Both Julia and Mary took the "Ruddy" name from the 1901 cencus and both married in the name of "Ruddy" and James is listed on both marriage certificates as "father" but as we know that could mean nothing
Thank you so much folks for all your help and I will keep you posted on what I find.

Births

Hi folks
Back again - I seem to have drawn a blank alround. I have had another thought - when Mary would have been at school the family were living in Lyon Street. Would the local school still have been St Alexanders or was there a closer Catholic school to Lyon Street ??
Regards

Lyons Street is the next Street to Dundas Street which came under the parish of St Alexander's. The records for this school are held in the Roman Catholic archives at The Cathdral. The archive starts at 1903. The archivist is Meg Whittle.

Hi Kathy
Sorry for delay in replying. I am very grateful for your help. Another daft notion bit the dust. I am now just clutching at straws - if it wasn't my grandmother I would let it drop. The most frustrating thing is there were 13 children and I have birth and death dates for all except grandmother.
Again many thanks for your help and interest

Hi Folks
Would just like to thank everyone once again for their help and to let you know I spotted an article in Liverpool Family Historian about th 1939 Register that was drawn up by the NHS. Having contacted them the beginning of June - I received their reply yesterday - and guess what - they had my Grandmothers birthday - I am now going to ask for a search on this birthday and see what happens.

One more piece of advice - who would be best to contact the GRO or Liverpool Register Office?????

Again many thanks for your help ides and suggestions.

The GRO, under their new rules, should refund your money if they don't find the entry from the information you provide, however, if you want to place criteria on your search, I often find that the Liverpool Register Office is very helpful.
