Chris, I am amazed at what you are finding out! I knew when Rachel D died, but had no idea her husband had been killed in an accident. Also, I didn't know she was older than her husband. As for the other deaths - who is Edward Archibald Doyle? Is he the son of James Doyle and Margaret Cannon? It would make his date of birth 1902, so too late for the 1901 census. My grandmother Bertha McDonnell nee Doyle (James was her uncle) lived in Lower Appleton Road, so not too far from Frederick Street.
Thanks again - and in advance for anything you find out about Mary Doyle's death from the inquest!
Anna

I suspect you are right since when he was a year old he was living with James 39, Margaret 41, Margarite 5 and Mary Norah age 3. You should get the copy of the 1911 census to be sure.anna trimmer wrote: As for the other deaths - who is Edward Archibald Doyle? Is he the son of James Doyle and Margaret Cannon?
There is also a birth for Edward Archibald Doyle Q2 1901 Prescot 8b 704.
Chris - what an asset to our forum you are with all this information at your fingertips, thank you for your help.

Hi Anna
Here is a condensed report of inquest for Mrs. Doyle.
FATAL RESULT OF A TRAP ACCIDENT NEAR WIDNES
Inquest report relates death of Mrs. Doyle licensee of the Crown Inn Ann St. West, Widnes. On Sunday afternoon Mrs. Doyle with Mrs. Jameson, Mrs. Edward Doyle and her baby, and William Jameson, went for a drive in a governess car, drawn by a pony owned by Mrs. Jameson. The normally very quiet mare appears to have taken fright at something and dashed of at a terrific pace. The lad tried to pull her up but in vain. As they reached a sharp turn at junction of Derby Rd. and Barrows Green Rd. Horse and trap were upset. All were thrown out Mrs. Doyle into a dry ditch. All suffered injuries, but Mrs. Doyle was worst with head injuries. She was taken into nearby house. And then home where she was attended to by a Dr. McLennan, She didn’t seem to be too badly hurt, but her condition deteriorated and She died the following day at about 10.pm. A member of the jury Councillor Quinn said she was respected in the community and he had often driven the same pony and found it very quiet. The verdict was Accidental Death.
If you want I can send you copies of inquest but they are photos of poor quality microfilm.
Cheers.

Hi Anna, John Donaldson highlights of inquest.
WIDNES WORKS FATALITY
INQUEST AND VERDICT.
Mill to be scrapped.
John Donaldson of 32 Belvoir Rd. a foreman over the Chlorate Dept. at Muspratt’s Works of The United Alkali Co. With 45 yrs service according to his son Edgar also a Foreman with the company. John Rolt processman was grinding chlorate of potash. When he heard a noise and saw the iron casing covering the mill lift up. The deceased was standing by the mill. He ran to the engine and shut off the steam. He found the deceased lying on the floor and the top stone of the mill was lying to the left of him. He went to the deceased and found that he was dead. Questions were asked about the mills history as the top had come off before. The company said they had consulted the factory inspector. They were always willing to carry out his suggestions. The factory inspector said he had nothing to do with the condition the mill was in at time of the accident. It was for the works to do what they thought was right. (Covering of backsides or what?)
The factory inspector said the stone had come off because Chlorate had built up on it. The company said this was just theory. But the inspector said lumps of chlorate seen on the millstone after the accident wasn’t theory but proof.
The company said the mill was to be scrapped. Verdict Misadventure.

Re: McDonnell and Doyle
Dear Anna,
I know it has been a while since you made these posts but I have only just joined the forum. The McDonnells of Widnes are still there and thriving (even though some of us now live elsewhere in the UK). We share the same great-grandfather.
My Grandad was your Uncle Ernest - our much-loved Grandad Ernie. He had two sons, Gordon and Maxwell. I am one of six grandchildren he had - all born in Widnes. I was in my late teens when he died.
My father is Gordon (Lewer Martin) McDonnell. My Dad is 90 in November and he is housebound, but he has a crystal clear memory and can still recount a vast amount of family history and innumerable anecdotes about life in Widnes. He also knows the details of every regiment that every member of the McDonnell clan served in! Your great grandfather, grandfather, and all those great-uncles lived in a small terraced house in Bower Street. It's still there.
I'm John McDonnell - but my middle name is Charles ... spot the family link?
My brothers are Keith and Andrew. Keith and his family still live in Widnes.
Sadly my dear Uncle Max died over 25 years ago, but "Maxwell" is another family name you will recognise. My cousins are David, Susan and Ian; all born in Widnes and the latter two still live there with their own families.
If you pick this up, let's share some more information.
John

Re: McDonnell and Doyle
Hi I am new to tracing the Doyle's. I am the granddaughter of Edward Archibald Doyle and have vivid memories of 53 Frederick St. He was always known as Archie and he married Mary - not sure of her maiden name. They went on to have 3 sons - Dennis , Brian and Peter. I am Brian's daughter. Brian followed Archie's footsteps into ICI where he worked all his life. After Archie's death, Mary lived in the house until full time care was needed. She moved into a home and after her death , Frederick St was sold. Kinda sad after it had been in the family for so long.
