Newspaper covering Hindley in 1893

An Elizabeth Alice Pownall aged 26 accidently fell into and was drowned in a tank of water in Hindly Hall on 02/07/1893. A coroners inquest was held on 04/07/1893 and a death certificate issued. I think she was a member of my family but given the nature of the death no home address is given and of course the informant was the coroner so the death certificate gives no family clues. Can anybody tell me which newspaper might have printed a report on this event and where back copies can be found. I live out of the area so any help would be appreciated.

Lancashire Library has acess to old newspapers, they pay subs to the Gage group 19th century British Library.
The crew will be able to tell you how to join the library for free.
I cannot say if there will be any info in there for you.

Ask at your local library if they have access to the Old Newspaper's site, if not join the Lancashire Libraryonline which will give you access when you get your card with membership number.

I have a note of newspapers held in various libraries http://liverpool-genealogy.org.uk/phpBB ... php?t=8300 but as you don't live local, if the Old Newspaper's site don't throw up any information, perhaps you could email one of the libraries direct and see if they will check the date for you.

I'll have a look at the site and let you know if I come across anything.

Sorry I don't see anything in the Liverpool Mercury, but it's possible there might have been something in a more local paper.

Thanks for the info. I will try the sites. I have the family on all the census and Daniel and Elizabeth Alice are the children of Thomas and his first wife Jane Battersby who died the year Elizabeth Alice was born. An Elizabeth Alice married a Robert Platts but this is not her. Once I got the death certificate I was intrigued to know more and confirm she was in deed the daughter of Thomas. The family link is distant - My Gt Gt Grandfather Paul Pownall was brother to Elizabeth Alice's grandfather Thomas but it would be interesting to know more about the incident.

Hindley Hall is now a Golf Club on the ouskirts of Hindley (can be Googled)and is less than a mile from where the family were living in 1891
