Tracing passport applications

Post by Barbara B »

I think I already know the answer to this question but I'll ask it anyway.
Is there a way to check whether someone made an application for a passport? The time-scale I'm looking at is 1920's-30's. I'm trying to trace my great great aunt, Christina Daly and her family who apparently emigrated to Australia. Her sister went and came back (twice) but I can't find anything on the Daly family. There is a record of a Christina Daly in Australia but I'm not sure it's the same one.
Any suggestions welcomed.
Thanks

From the National Archives

Collection of passports in FO 655 (whole series: 2,097 passports)
A collection illustrating the many different types of passport issued between 1802 and 1961. It includes some passports issued by Foreign Missions in this country to British subjects wishing to travel abroad.

These records in FO 655 could only be searched by place of issue and year. Now you can also search them by name and place of birth.

Linked to this project, the search register of passport applications for 1851-1856, 1858-1862 and 1874-1903 has been digitised by Findmypast - an external company independent from The National Archives - and are searchable through their website.

Passport Office: Case papers in FO 737 (whole series: 130 files)
Approximately 500 new item descriptions in FO 737 have been released during the year, searchable by name, place of birth, place of residence (when available), application number and date of application.

Have you searched passenger lists under variations of the spelling of Daly? What about tackiling from the other end are there any useful records in Australia? Such as Electoral rolls directories etc.

Hi Barbara,
Post a birth year for Christina and I'll do a browse of outgoing passengers.
Also her sister's name and YoB.

Thanks Ed Officer and Dickiesam.
Ed - yes, I found Christina's sister in Sydney on the 1930 electoral role but no sign of her family.
Dickiesam - her name is Christina Daly née Cummins. Her dob is 1886 in Liverpool. If it's any help her husband is Paul J Daly also born Liverpool 1886. Christina's sister, Margaret Ellen Tester is listed in 1926 on the passenger list of the Otranto inward to Sydney and again in 1933 on the Balranald also inward to Sydney.
I'd be really grateful if you could have a look for them.
Cheers

Christina Daly

Hi Barbara,
Could you confirm where and when Christina married Paul Daly? The only marriage for Christina in England and Wales that I can find [1905 - 1935] is this one.....
Marriages Mar 1922:
CALLAND, Charles - Cummins - Toxteth P. - 8b - 158a.
CUMMINS, Christina A - Calland - Toxteth P. - 8b - 158a.

Incidentally, the only birth I could find [1880 - 1890] was this one in 1884, not 1886: Births Dec 1884: CUMMINS, Christina - Liverpool - 8b - 13.

A passenger list search for Daly and Cummins didn't produce a 'good' hit.

Hi Dickiesam
I've just rechecked the date I have for the marriage (1908) and Christina is registered as 'Cummings'. The name seems to have changed sometime in the 1880's-90's, I'm not sure why. Sorry to have led you up the garden path a bit.
Thanks for looking anyway
