Looking for an 1894 liverpool birth certificate

Post by wdroberts »

for John Burke..On 1901 census as aged 7 ... 3rd child of Catherine and Michael Burke . Census ref: RG13/3410 page 6. residing at 24/ 4 burlington Street, L'pool

Liverpool Register Office ( Lorraine) did a great job for me as I asked for birth cert TP/ 356/3 for a John Burke born in 1894......BUTTTTTTTTTTT....he's not my man....different father and mother first names ..diff address....diff fathers occupation.

Apparantly no John Burkes in 1893 or 1895.......can anyone help ...or have I made a fundemental error here. NB I am a comparative novice at all this.
my thanks in advance

Hi and welcome to the forum.

There is a John Burke Q4 1893 West Derby 8b 614 and
John Frederick Burke Q3 1893 West Derby 8b 537

These seem to be the nearest to the date you are looking at, the references are those for the GRO rather that the local Register Office.

The Register Office reference for the John Frederick entry is WDM/73/92 but I suspect that the other John hasn't yet been transcribed as it's not obvious in the list on LancashireBMD.
Apparantly no John Burkes in 1893 or 1895
Did the Register Office say this or was it just yourself checking on the LancsBMD site ?

I would suggest you ask the Register Office if they could check their registers, giving those quarters and parents names and address, hopefully they will find one with the correct parents.

On the Liverpool History Projects website www.liverpoolhistoryprojects.co.uk they have listed a John Burke born and christened in 1894 at Our Lady's of the Reconciliation church parents given as Michael Burke and Catherine Heyes. It costs £3 to get further details or if you live in Liverpool you can look it up at Liverpool Record Office. If that turns out to be the correct person you would then have a date of birtj. The site also records a Mary Ellen to to the same couple in 1892 at the same church.

I cannot find a marriage for the couple at the moment. Do you have them in the 1911 census at that will say how long they have been married?

Michael Burke married Catherine Hay Dec Q 1890 GRO ref volume 8b page 24

The marriage is on www.lancashirebmd.org.uk

GRO = General Register Office
Every quarter the Birth, Marriage and Death Registers are forwarded from local Register Offices to the General Register Office which compiles the indexes for England and Wales. You can check these indexes in a number of places, most libraries with a local/family history department and Record Offices have them on microfiche, they are also available online by subscription on www.ancestry.co.uk www.genesreunited.com www.Findmypast.com and possibly others.

Q1 = Jan-Feb-Mar
Q2 = Apr-May-Jun
Q3 = Jul-Aug-Sep
Q4 = Oct-Nov-Dec

Given the address you quoted - Burlington Street - also with the Church that our Education Officer has found the baptism, I would believe that the registration district was West Derby as this covers most of the north of Liverpool, including part of the centre of town and out towards Bootle.

Your easiest and cheapest way forward is to order the baptism certificate through the Liverpool History Projects site, address given above, unless anybody is visiting the Record Office who might be willing to do a look up for you.

PS RC Baptisms usually give godparents also, you may find that these are relatives and will help your research.
