William Lindsay....Sooooo sorry crew!

New Year - new determination! So I'm back on William Lindsay. To recap - thought I'd found him as born to James and Mary Lindsay, Liverpool, reg 1q 1871. Sent for cert. He was born Dec 14th 1870. Happy....for a while. Sneaky suspicion I had the wrong one as ages varied on different papers. So I trawled through the census of 1881 again and found a possible William Lindsay aged 8 with widowed mother Bella. Went back to 1871 and found same Isabella married to John with children Margaret, Andrew, John, James Angus and Archibald Nelson. Two of Williams daughters were named Isabella and Margaret, one son named William James and one named John.
William's first marriage cert has his father named as John, a joiner. The John on the 1871 is a Pattern Maker. Thought I'd send for a birth certificate. Presuming this William is born 1873.....can I find a fitting birth ? Can I heck! All census give him born Liverpool. Any advice would be very gratefully received. Soooo sorry to be banging on about this old boy again!

AND.....I just found the family in 1861 in Glasgow....father John aged 24...... JOINER!
Okay, now need to find this boy William's birth in Liverpool. I wonder - WAS he born in Liverpool?

Hi

Although civil reg was introduced in 1837 - it only became a "fineable" offence to fail to register a birth in 1875 so many births went unregistered.

I have my paternal grandmothers christening record for 1877 which ties in with all census info and her age on death - but there is no birth registration for her and she was b Liverpool

Many thanks Carole. Now absolutely positive I've found the family (and a lot more besides) in Scotland. Presuming they came south between 1868 and 1871. I wonder if they didn't actually know how to go about registering a birth? William was definitely not born in Scotland like the rest of the kiddies. My eyes are crossed searching Scotlandspeople! Now I need to pin down that boys christening! 1871 has them in Turner (?) Street. Any ideas on a place for christening search anyone?

I agree that William must have been born in Liverpool as the family were here in 1871 and he is 8yrs old on 1881 so b 1872/73

I'm applying for the death cert today for John Lindsay. That's the only one that fits in with his age (teeny bit out) and time of death. Found loads more info last night and have pinned down his birth in Glasgow - 1834. Have to go back and check another find.....an illegitimate William Lindsay born to a Helen Lindsay. Uh-oh!!!! Possible "Keep it in the family?"
