Can Jan 44,Collette or the wombat from Aussie tell mehow l f

Post by george »

Its George from the Pontack , back of the Poly in Byrom St,included the C! You found my Grandad and Great Grandad in Liverpool and started me off on this great search! Its 3 years ago, still drudgiing around in the sands of Formby! Sorry I sent the wombat all over West Derby when I think, I found her in Formby. Name like Margaret Kelly, in Liverpool, takes years to find!! New One for you all if I have rejoined!!
How do I,for a friend find his Grandma, he thinks went down on the Titanic! He thinks her name was....Clara Jennett from Sheffield!
Hope you can do for him what you all did for Me! I hope Jan 44, Collette Wombat and all are still awake!! Tony

It would be best if your friend worked backwards from his own birth, confirming his parentage and marriages as he goes. That will pinpoint ages much more accurately as a start off, and is easier to do these days since Ancestry has a far better search engine now than it used to.

If you don't have access to Ancestry yourself, your local library should have it for free.

A loss on the Titanic.

Post by george »

Hi all, glad to hear you all are well and raring to go. I realise my inital request was vague but his knowlege of the event is too. He (thinks) it was his Grandmother, who left the family, before his father was born in 1901, going to later to the US. I did try one site but got funny vibes and warnings. Clara Jennett sounds good. I have a fair bit on the family after last night on puter and will stop thinkink and give you some facts when I have printed them. Thanks for your interest, will be back, Tony.
p.s. I still owe the wombat a fosters for trailing around west derby for my nan when she was in formby.

Clara Jennett.

Have found her on 1911c. She also has a daughter, Clara. Mum born 1881
married to Albert Jennett also sister, Annie Jennett, born 1908 in Sheffield and Mum of my pal. Is this the Lady I may be looking for? She must have left her husband, and why? Tony

I' confused

If I understand you your friend's mum is called Annie Jennett and you have found her in Sheffield in the 1911 census with her parents Albert and Clara and another child called Clara.

A family story says Clara went down with the Titanic but so far there is no evidence of this this.

Firstly you need to look for any deaths for Clara in this country.

You need to find out if the family remained in the Sheffield area - where were your friends' parents married?

The Titanic is a well documented disaster and there are lists of the pasengers on a number of websites.

Albert Jennett married Calra Simpkin September Q 1903 Sheffield Registration district volume 9c page 867

There is a death of a Clara Jennett registered Sheffield 1941 aged 60 volume 9c page 908 (sorry I didn't write the quarter down). This death certificate looks a possibility.

There is a also a marriage of what is probably the daughter.

I found these all on Ancestry

Albert is on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website
he was a sapper of the Royal Egineers agesd 39. He died 21 March 1918

listed as husband of Clara Jennett of 12 Hadfield Terrace Walkley Sheffield

this last detail would have been given by Clara the next of kin

If this is your friend's Albert and Clara she didn't go down with the Titanic

Thank you for the conformation of the details I have found!
I said my friend was devoid of information regarding his family.
Yes he told me about the listing on the war graves.
I do not know who is researching his family.
Perhaps we may work together. All he knew was his father may have been Percy Austin Flockton from Sheffield.
My friend was only a postman, did not know his family.
I have found a lot. Tony

Am I looking for Carla or Clara?

Post by george »

Hi its Tony,
I think his family have done some research and have gone down the wrong route. He has said his Gt. Father in law died in the Somme!
How can I find his record please. Tony

I believe our Education Officer has made some good points and your friend should question some of the family stories he has heard and commence his research using facts.

There are details of Service Records, Pensions etc. on Ancestry and you may also find some information on the National Archives site.

Yes, the woman, Clara Flockton, nee Simkin is the lady on the Titanic. That was my origional request for where I may find a listing of passengers. I do have all the families info back to 1806. Clara was the mother, leaving her husband Albert and her daughters Clara, Annie and Wynnie. You have also told me of his death in the First World War which I was aware of but only just found his name and family and that was to be my next search. The information on him to the war office would have been given by Clara his Daughter, then an orphan.
Thank yu all Tony.

Thank you Mary A for the slap on the wrists! I appologise for my rudeness
born of ignorance. I have ammended my posts as requested. My friend is so vague about his family because of loss of early contact in his life. His surname is so profuse in the Sheffield area I am frustated but that is not an excuse. Tony
