Tracing an unknown father - front page of the Echo 1929/30

Hi

My name is John and I live in Australia. I am trying to help my mum identify her Grandfather.

This is the story as I understand it:

My Mums Grandmother was Alice Ann Pimbblet (born in Liverpool 1905 and died in Liverpool 1975). Alice was due to marry a man but fell pregnant before the marriage.

The man called off the marriage so Alice Ann's family sued the mans family.

This went to court and the story apparently made the front page of the Liverpool Echo.

I am led to believe that the man was a police officer and in court he accused Alice Ann Pimbblet of sleeping with one/two of his friends and that was his reason for breaking off the marriage.

Alice Ann gave birth to twin girls on the 1st of April 1930. The girls where called June Lillian Pimbblet and Joan Pimbblet. Joan Pimbblet died shortly after birth.

Alice Ann later married Isaac Lawless and June Pimbblet became June Lawless.

June was my Grandmother (My mothers mother)

As June Pimbblet was born on the 1st April 1930 I guess this happened in 1929/30.

If it was on the front of the paper (which I am assured it was) then that seems to me the only way I might ever trace the fathers name.

If anybody can offer help or advice it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi John.

If the mother of the children took the father to court it may be recorded in the Affiliation records. These are held at the Liverpool Record Office under 347 MAG Affiliation records. From what I know of the Liverpool Echo in 1929/30 the first two pages were adverts. I cant promise anything but when I get time I will look in the affiliation to see if the mother took the father to court to get him to pay for the upbringing the the child.

Was it alleged that the man she was due to marry was the father of her child?

I am assuming that no fathers name is shown on either of the twins birth certs?

I don't think my Mum has the birth certificate but I do know that my Grandma had to get a copy of it for a trip to canada to see her Auntie. My Grandma never knew who her father was so i guess his name cant have been on the birth certificate (but i don't know this for certain) i am told she was very upset when she received her birth certificate because it had Bastard or Illegitimate stamped on it.

Alice Ann was adamant that her husband to be was the father and absolutely refuted the claims she had slept with other men - but then obviously she would.

I am sorry there is not very much to work with but I felt the Liverpool Echo story may have given the search a glimmer of hope.

For your own certainty I would suggest that you get a copy of the birth certificate. You can do this online at http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ using the following information

Birth rego gives the maiden name of mother as Pimbblet.
Alice Ann's marriage cert may have given her father's name??
Doubtful.
The court case seems the way to go, sorry we can't view the info online to help you.
As Mary said, the birth rego may give some details of the father??
Seems very unlikely in view of your Grannies memories of birth cert.

I believe Alice Ann Pimbblets parents were:

John Pimbblet
B 1872 Lancashire
D 1896 Liverpool

Alice Wright
B 1879 United Kingdom

The June Pimbblet in this tale is my Mums mum and the story surrounding my mums Father is even more complicated and I managed to help her identify her Grandfather yesterday! I am also hopeful I have found her grandmother who gave him away at birth.

In fact I found this website by searching for the name Elijah Ashcroft on Google (who is my mums Great Grandfather) and I came across this thread http://www.liverpool-genealogy.org.uk/p ... c16ad654c3

I do have quite a few more loose ends though and hope you may be able to help me.

By looking in the affiliation records (347 Mag) which are held at Liverpool Record Office I was able to indentify the name of the Putative(Reputed, Supposed, His Putative Father) (Oxford Dictionary) which I passed on to John Lee. I dont want to mention the name of the Father as there may be living relatives.

These records are Court cases that where brought against the Putative Fathers by the Mother of the Child. If the case was found against the Father he had to pay towards the upbringing of the Child until they reached the age of 15 years.

The Records start at 1924 upwards.

I was unable to locate any reference in the local newspapers.

These records are open to look at in the Liverpool Record Office.
