Shepherd family research - Samuel Shepherd

Post by Tom_Shepo »

After years of my and my grandad wanting to research our family I've decided to take the first step.

I'm completely new to this (bar joining a site for a year once for £30 which was useless) so I'll probably need referencing to certain documents, websites etc

Ok, now to Samuel. My grandad is 78, he was one of the younger sons of Samuel Shepherd (not sure if there was a middle) name so I'm guessing he was about 25 when he had my grandad which puts his birth at about 1905.
He died young, when my grandad was around 7 so his death may have been around 1940 making him 32. This is speculative though, just a 'guess-timation'.

They had around 7 kids I think, one of the girls moved to Australia and one to America, he had 2 older brothers I believe.

Can anyone help? I'll try and get more information from my Grandfather.

Thanks in advance!

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Does your grandfather have his birth certificate? If he does this will list his father's name (which you know and his mother's name and maiden name. If you don't you need toi find the birth registration information for him. You can either list his name and someone will look for it or you can go to your local library and on Ancestry which is free in the library but paying from home you can look for Grandad's registration which will give his mother's maiden name.

Once you have this it will then be possibly to search for a marriage of a Samuel Shepherd to whatever the maiden naeme was that has been found. This search could be done on Ancestry or on www.lancashirebmd.org.uk or ww.freebmd.org.uk.

Please come back with a little more information maybe Grandad's first name and we'll all see what we can do to help.

If your grandfather's mother's name was Mary Close this seems a possible marriage on www.lancashirebmd.org.uk

Samuel G Shepherd married Mary E Close 1927 at St Mary the Virgin West Derby.

Hi Tom and welcome.
When I saw your name listed as a new member I wondered if you were researching Shephard/Shepherd/Sheppard/Shepperd.
My niece married into the same surname & it drives her nuts trying to do their tree.
Good luck!!
You've come to the right place, best "genie" forum around.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

I know many of our members will give you as much help and advice as they can, but I thought you might like to glance down one or two of our posts at the top of the board, especially the one about what information can be obtained from a Record Office look up and when a certificate needs to be ordered from either the local Register Office or the GRO.

sorry I didn't get back sooner, busy weekend!

Didn't realise I hadn't put my grandfathers name.

Patrick Shepherd
Birth: 17 March (around 1931)
He was married to: Margaret Mahn (not sure if I've spelt those 100% right, but pretty close)

Samuel served in the Navy at some point, not sure if that was just for the war.

I have found a birth registration for a Patrick Shepherd in the June Q (April, May, June) 1931 which would appear to be Grandad. The mpther's maiden name is given as Cassidy. There are a number of childrten born Shepherd with maiden name Cassidy running from 1919 to 1933 who may or may not be siblings. I am not putting names as they may still be living.

I think we would then be looking for a marriage of a Shepherd to a Cassidy which so far I cannot find.

There is a marriage in 1955 of a Patrick Shepherd to Margaret Mahon does that seem the right marriage?

Wow, Education Officer, that's all perfect.
Cassidy is my Grandads mothers maiden name.
and Margaret Mahon is my grandmother, yes.

Is it too much to ask for the links to the information you got?
Namely;
  • My grandfathers birth registration.
    My grandfathers siblings.
    My grandfather and grandmothers marriage.
Thank you very much!

All the birth registrations I found on www.ancestry.co.uk this is a paying website but you can do a free 14 day free trial BUT your local library has a subscription to Ancestry Library Collection so you can look there.

We need to find the marriage of Samuel Shepherd to his wife _______ Cassidy of that you can get further back. I shall keep looking. Does your grandfather have his birth certifictate? That would have his mopther's maiden name on it.

Samuel Shepherd married Mary J cassidy September Quarter 1914 West Derby Registration district volume 8b page 1035 or it could be 1035

I found the marriage on www'lancashirebmd.org.uk and because it was Registrar attended or register office meaning that someone cannot do a look up for you as we don't know the church. I looked for it on Ancestry with no success but found it on www.findmypast.com

You can order the marriage certificate from the GRO and that will give the name sof the 2 fathers.

Possible death for Samuel 1940 Dec Quarter Liverpool Registration district volume 8b page 344 age 60. This was on Ancestry.
