1901 census decipher

Post by tsumi »

Hello all,

Tsumi is in need again of a better pair of eyes than her own, to decipher the address on the 1901 West Derby,Liverpool census. The details are...

Joseph Ivison age 34,born Cumberland, and family.....
ref .RG13/3495
district 59.
Page 56,
I can make out that it is a Public House, but not the name or place, maybe Hall Lane ?

Many thanks.

I would definitely say Hall Lane, check also the Enumerator's description

"On the North by Prescot Street, on the East by Hall Lane, on the South by Mount Vernon Road, and on the West by Mount Vernon Road, the boundary of this district is irregular and embraces only the streets &co. and part of Hall Lane named in the Contents".

I would think his birthplace is Penrith rather than Parrith

The pub is probably the Alexandra Hotel, 78 Hall Lane, which was managed by Joseph Ivison in 1909, owned by Peter Walker & Son Ltd. He had been there since at least 1900. It had doors in Hall Lane and Bengel St.

Hall Lane also had the Wellington at no. 8, Majestic at 10, Apollo at 66.

Thanks so much for the extra piece of information.
I take it that it isn,t there now and has gone the way so many more have in recent years.

Cheers Tsumi :D :D

I hadn't realised it was the road leading to the bottom of Edge Lane. If you go to www.maps.google.co.uk and search for Hall Lane, choose the Liverpool 7 one and then choose the Satellite option, you can zoom in to streetview and see what it's like now. Unfortunately there isn't anything on the even side of the road, it's now a playground and possibly a youth club with games pitches behind.

It was near to the Liverpool town and another relative who had managed a Pub at that time in Grafton Street.
It was only through marriage, so although the two families may have known each other, they wouldn,t have been aware of the future connection!
Thanks again to both of you for your time and help.

Hi T from T :)
My kid sister was born in Hall Lane, Jan 1953, we lived over a cake shop :D
My late brother was in the Post Office in Hall Lane, they drank next door at the Alexandra Hotel...

1911 Gores/Kellys Directory Joseph is still there.

Hi Tina,
I have just got back from a Xmas shopping fest, and seen your reply about The Alexandra pub.
It,s a small world isn,t it.
I have googled Alexandra and it looks like some of the Brewery records are in the Liverpool Archives,so when the eyes return to their normal colour instead of red,I will do a bit more travelling.

Happy Xmas all ,and thanks to everyone on the forum for their invaluable help in the past year,Tsumi.
