Was looking to going to LRO - but the traffic on the M62 has put paid to that!!

Anyway - if anyone wants any lookups doing in Leigh today - give me a shout - presuming i can log on in Leigh at lunchtime that is!

The staff at the library where very helpful.

I am a Nanny to a 3 year old and we went grave hunting in St Thomas Church Golborne first - I was trying to take a photo of a stone which was flat down - so was in an awkward position - well the toddler tried to copy me - but slipped over, pulling me over in the process!!! Result one screamer and two very muddy green slutchy peeps!! So this delayed our outing by an hour whilst we got cleaned up.

Anyhow - the mother of the child wants me out of the house all day again NEXT monday, so im going again.

The fiche films are brilliant - giving an exact copy of marriage certs.

Dont know what the rest of the records are like - but it looks promising.

So if you have any specific requests for look ups in the leigh and surrounding areas - shout out and I will see what I can do.

Golborne St. Thomas

Post by Glenys »

Hi Sonja,
I don't know if you know but the Leigh Group run a Help Desk on a Monday afternoon at Leigh Library.

I noticed also that you were interested in Golborne St. Thomas's Churchyard. The Leigh Group recorded all the MIs in that churchyard several years ago and it is published by the Society (available from the Publications Officer). Alternatively, if you know the details of the family you are interested in - I could check my original copy.

Hello Sonja

Sorry for using abbreviations - MIs in family history usually stands for Monumental Inscriptions when referring to graves. In other words all the details recorded on the headstones. The book which is published by the Liverpool & SW Lancs. FHS lists all the details, with an index and plan showing where the graves are in each graveyard.

Sometimes MIs is also used to refer to Members' Interests, which means the names that a member is researching.

Hope that helps.

Leigh lookup

Post by thistlebay »

Hi Sonja

Wonder if you could do a look up for me at Leigh Library.

My 3xg grandmother Mary Oddy was born in Pennington Leigh in I think 1800. Her baptism at St Mary the Virgin Church Leigh. She was either born or christened on 8/11/1800.

I really would appreciate her parents names and any other information there is to hand there, ie., other family members etc.

Thanks a million
Catherine

Mary Oddy - Daughter of William Oddy & Sarah
Abode: Pennington
Register: Baptisms 1798 - 1812, Page 29

Baptism: 1 May 1824 St Mary the Virgin, Leigh, Lancashire, England

Hope that helps - albeit belatedly.
