LRO lookup please

Post by riley »

I am looking for the birth of Ellen Riley born about 1845 and have found the following references on Free BMD.
The father must be Patrick and mother Elizabeth or Bessy.

Liverpool Vol 20 page 410 Sept 1843
Liverpool VOl 20 page 411 Sept 1843
Liverpool Vol 20 page 310 Sept 1847
Liverpool Vol 20 page 476 Sept 1848
Liverpool Vol 20 page 429 Sept 1849

I know I am asking a lot but could someone look these up for me? I assume the necessary info will be at the LRO

Birth - Ellen Riley

Post by dickiesam »

Hello Riley,
Please see the Sticky from MaryA, below the announcements, re BMD look-ups.
BIRTH AND DEATH look ups are what are often requested but there is one way ONLY of getting details from a birth or death certificate and that is by purchasing the certificate.
You might be able to find an Ellen Riley with the right parents in the 1851 and 1861 censuses. Her age on the census would enable you to 'fine-tune' the birth hits on FreeBMD. Do you have any idea of where the parents lived in Lancashire? It would cut down the search options in the census.

I couldn't find a suitable 'candidate' in the 1851 but there is one living with parents Patrick and Elizabeth in the 1861. All three are born in Ireland. See RG0- - Piece 2667 - Folio 31 - Page 56. This Ellen was born in 1845. There are two others listed without the parents in the census, one is a student - pauper and the other a servant.

I am sorry for the long delay in replying. I have been away and picked up the messages on my return.
I now realise that births cannot be checked at the LRO. My problem is that the 1861 census shows Ellen and her brother Thomas Joseph Riley as having been born in Ireland which would appear to be correct as the their father Patrick would have given this information.
However on 1881 census both Ellen (now Ellen Sweeney) and Thomas gave their place of birth as Liverpool. This led me to try and find Ellen's birth if indeed she was born in Liverpool. Finding her in Ireland would be a hopeless task.
The family are not on the 1851 or 1871 census. Thomas married in Dublin in 1870. Post 1881 I have a pretty full history of the family.
I think I will now have to ask the GRO to look at the births I have identified and issue a certificate only if the correct mother and father are shown.

Ellen (now Ellen Sweeney) and Thomas

Hi,
Re their place of birth... Have you found them on the 1911 census.

Quite often I have found that either a county or town in Ireland has been written down in the Place of Origin box in this census, in addition to just the dreaded "Ireland". It enabled me to find two rellies that I had only known as being born in Ireland from previous censuses.

Thomas Joseph Riley married Isabella West in St.Peters church,Dublin in 1870 and I have the marriage cert for this. It does not help me solve the present problem. Have been to Dublin to see where they lived etc.

bmd look ups

I have now had the opportunity of applying to the GRO for the birth refereces I gave and they were all negative. They did send me one wrong birth cert despite me giving them cross references, so if anyone wants a cert for an Ellen Riley born 12 August 1849 at 46 Brick Street Liverpol father Terece mother Bridget I will gladly send it to them.
This confirms my previous inclination that Ellen and brother Thomas were born in Ireland despite conflicting information on census returns.
Trying to find them in Ireland will be a hopeless task as I have no idea where they came from although they did have Dublin connections in the 1870swhich I have investigated.
