Military help - what do these initials mean?

Post by Hilary »

I am trying to find out if my grandfather Frederick Charles Ambrose served in the First World War.

He was a wagon builder and worked on the railways. I have a vague recollection that he worked on the railways during the First World War possibly FRance. I could however have imagined this. He died in 1961.

I know there are no papers for him However I have found someone on the Medal Rolls who interests me. Under Regiment it says

L C C O ex T R Bn

It says badge handed in to Police.

I think TR Bn means train battalion but not sure.

There are 5 Frederick Charles Ambroses born England and Wales between 1885 and 1902. I have excluded 2 of them so far the one in the Labour Corps and the one in the RASC.

Hope our military experts can help.

PS Grandad was born in 1889 in St Helens and was living in Liscard during the First World War. He appears in the absent voters list for 1918/1919. I know all about his ancestry and children etc just trying to sort out possible war service.

TR was Training Battalion - a unit without links to a particular regiment, getting infantrymen ready to go to war.
LC is quite likely to be Labour Corps - there is an excellent site:
<http://www.labourcorps.co.uk >
run by Ivor Lee, who studies that Corps in detail.

'Badge handed in to police' - badge often means a Silver War Badge, issued to those discharged through wounds or illness, to save them from white feathers etc and individualy named. Was there any mention of an SWB on the medal card?
M. no. 31

Many thanks for that I can now get rid of that one as he ties to the one in the Labour Corps
