St Vincent de Pauls - Father Berry's Home

I am wandering whether I could find some information of how my granddad ended up in Father Berry's Home when he came from London. Is there any records that may give this information.

I have been told by family that he ran away from home on a ship and ended in Liverpool, but I would like some more information if I could get some.
