16 Bourne Street, Liverpool

This address popped up in some research I've been doing on a branch of my family.
Can anyone tell me who was living there in 1938/39?

Thanks Tina, what a speedy response that was!
Trouble is, I have no idea who Jas.Harman is. Any chance that someone has 1939 Directory?

Hello again
Perhaps if you give us a name we can have a longer look.
I'm not sure if anyone has the Directory for the next year.
The info for 1938 probably took a year to compile so it could have been 1937 occupant at the address.

Thanks again, Tina
The family name I'm looking for is Birchall.

They arrived in Liverpool from Canada in July of 1938, and in the passenger list for the ship they were on they stated that their home address was 16 Bourne Street.

Hi again
Perhaps Bourne street was the address of a relative they were going to stay with?
I'm not sure.
I know people arriving at that time had to give a contact address.
Could you tell us why they came from Canada and a little more about your Birchalls please?

Thank you

Tell you more? Don't tempt me! I could achieve Olympic gold medal standard for 'long-winded and boring family stories'.

This was the end of my great-grandfather David's third tour of Canada. He seemed to like the country. This time he was returning after a stay of 10 years. He had been working as a steward in a student residence at McGill University, Montreal. He was Lancashire born, so maybe he was home-sick.
He arrived first, giving his parents address in St Helens as his contact address, but a few weeks later his wife and son sailed into Liverpool, giving 16 Bourne Street as their address.

The name you gave earlier, James Harmer, is not known to me and he is not a relative. I wondered if my great grandfather had rented the house after him, or perhaps it was a guest house?
The family finally ended up in East Anglia. Did they stay in Liverpool for any significant time after July 1938 or was it just a 'staging post' on their journey? Did they move out to the country because of the Liverpool blitz in 1940?
The more you find out about your rellies, the more questions pop up.

Malcolm

The Record Office tells me that the resident in 1939 was William Bell, a ship's fireman.
Now that's better!
Bell is the maiden name for my Emma Birchall. I will hazard a guess that William was her father or brother.
Unfortunately it probably also means that the address was one of convenience rather than a final destination.

Bourne Street now appears to be a car park (GoogleEarth). Anyone know if it was a casualty of the Liverpool blitz?
