Local newspaper query - Atherton

Post by Stephn Nulty »

I am researching some men of Atherton who fell in the Great War. Could somebody please advise me what the local newspaper was at that time and also the location of archived copies or microfilms of same,

Regards

Hi Stephen, sorry you received no response to your query. I don't know the answer but googled and found the Leigh Journal online and have sent them an email asking how long they have been publishing and if they know which newspaper would cover the area at that date and the location of any archived copies.

I'll let you know what response I get.

Maybe I'm a little late with this information but the reply I got was

The first Journal was The Tyldesley Weekly Journal which began in August 1873 then Leigh came aboard January 1874.
Your best bet for archive material is local history Librarian at Leigh Library, main no is 01942 404404.

i was given the name of Local History Librarian, but don't feel comfortable printing it here, if you need it send me a pm.
