A belated thank you for the last three replies. Pleased to know the name of the place where he died. I love the enthusiasm on this site.
Re. the question of whether he owned Stanleigh I assume he did because some years ago his last living granddaughter wrote to me in reply to a query I made. In the letter she writes that she believed he died intestate because she remembers that it took her father two or three years before his claim to the bungalow was recognised. He went there when Liverpool and Bootle were being heavily bombed. He then sold it in the later 1940s.
I know there is no will because I looked at the National Archives site so I think my aunty was right. I wonder if there would be records of that I could look at?
In view of the above do you think I'm justified in going back to look at Scotlandspeople and just concentrating on Renfrewshire?

On the contrary Tina,
Every little helps. I've just looked up an old Liverpool A-Z which has the Wirral on it and you are right about Eleanor Rd. It is a corner bungalow and the other road is Lingham Lane which is an old road and meanders where it pleases.
One tiny point - I'm assuming the date is 1938?

Hi
If he was living in Wallasey it is likely that a will would be probated or an administration granted in Liverpool. This wouldn't show on the National Archives site.
You need to search the probate indexes for England and Wales (not on line) but available at some Record offices (Liverpool or Lancashire) then you can send for a copy of the administration to York. Or you can send direct to York and for an extra cost they will search either side of the death date for the administration. this will tell you who applied for administration and the size of the estate etc.
More details here

I would imagine that there was a possible obituary in the Wallasey paper. This is on film at Wallasey library and they have a bit of an index.

Thanks for the references - I'll store them so if I ever make it there I can look.
So Wallasey has "a bit of an index" hmmm - perhaps I'll need to schedule some serious time when I do get there....

Hi
It's a bit of an index to the local paper. It lists surnames and page numbers. I ploughed through a lot before I found the one I wanted. If you go to Wallasey library book the film reader before you go.
If your man was buried in Wallasey it would more than likely be at Rake Lane Cemetery. I think (not sure about this) that they have an index of burials to the cemetery.

Celia on Rootschat seems to have resumed her look up offer.

You will need to be positive about the year of death and if you know the religion that will be a great help.

Hi
I'm down in Bedfordshire helping a friend research her family and whilst in Bedford Archives noticed by my right knee the probate index so looked for your Allison
1936
Allison William of Stanleigh Lingham Lane Moreton Cheshire died 17 March 1936 at the Municipal Hospital Birkenhead Probate Liverpool 12 may to James Allison general labourer
Effects £442 5s 3d
You can get a copy of the will (there must have been one) from York. Look at the link about wills.
Hope this helps

Brilliant Ed.O. I'm sure that's going to help.
By the way, wave to my ancestors while you are passing through Bedfordshire, both my mother's sides came from there in the late 1700's, but by different routes to London by the time she was born.

This is just to thank again the helpers especially Mary and Ed. Officer. The will arrived yesterday. I haven't learnt much but I know his solicitors and the address at the time, of his sole living child and when the will was drawn up. I just thought everyone would like to know they have yet again come up with the goodies. Ye toil not in vain......
