Marriage for James Rigby Wilcock

Post by Fazak8474 »

James is the brother of my great grandfather Richard Wilcock, parents of both are John Wilcock and Letitia Rigby. James was born before parents marriage at All Saints Wigan on 28 Jan 1850. James was baptised James Rigby on 22 Oct 1848 at All Saints Hindley. On 1871 Census James is with his Wilcock family (parents and siblings) in Golborne, he is single age 22. On 1881 and 1891 Census he is married to Sarah, he is called James Rigby living in Golborne. But in 1901 and 1911 he is James Rigby Wilcock living in Leigh.
His first child is Albert Rigby baptised 24 Nov 1872 at St Thomas Golborne and then Edwin on 3 March 1879.

In 1881 his father John is living separately from his mother Letitia and in 1891 his father John is living with his 13yr old son Walter Caunce his child by another woman.
My query is I cannot find his marriage to Sarah; guessing this was between 1871 and Nov 1872 when Albert baptised.
I have tried to find baptisms for his other 7 children but can only find Albert and Edwin, any help would be appreciated. Thank you very much.
Regards Susan

Having a quick look at the 1911 census for John and Sarah, it says they have been married for 38 years, making it roughly 1873.

I can see one marriage entry on 7th September 1874 in Miles Platting Manchester for a James Wilcock, Engineer, marrying Sarah Alice Chadwick. James' father is stated as John, a boilermaker. Not sure if you have any occupation for John in any census returns? The witnesses were Thomas Wilcock and Elizabeth Willcock.

Thanks so much, I am really impressed. I searched in Wigan and Leigh when I couldn't find it in Golborne but didn't think of Bolton. He didn't enter his father's name on the cert so I guess he was really upset with his Dad's behaviour. Regards Susan

Just to confirm. GRO has BLEAKLEY as MMN for birth registrations for both Stella and Leah.

Good to have belt and braces.
