Was Ann Bragger hiding?

Post by alleycat »

Alleycat and I were very grateful for all the help offered on the Forum on our last conundrum and wondered if you whizz kids could do the same with our next!!

Can anyone help us find Ann Bragger and her son William Kelly on the 1851 census living in Liverpool?
Birth between 1810- 1814 - possibly Runcorn.
Marries Edward Kelly 1836
Son William born 1837
Edward Kelly dies 1838
Daughter Ann born 1839 - dies 1840

1841 Census - POSSIBLY her living Kitchen Street. (William her son is with his grandmother)

1842 Marries George Bragger
1843 Birth of Daughter Margaret Ann - dies 1845
1844 Birth of son George Bragger - dies later in 1844
1846 her husband George Bragger dies

1854 Her death certificate states she was 40 in 1854 and she was living 12 Northumberland street. The resident of informant was 12 Northumberland Street a Margaret Pownall - no relation as far as we know.
We believe her son William may have been at sea as he was a mariner in his early years of marriage.

We wondered if parts of census for that area of Liverpool were missing in 1851? Or possibly she reverted to her original married name?
Your thought greatly appreciated

It appears the above Ann Bragger/Ball was alive and well after 1854.

Margaret Pownall pops up quite a bit, I would investigate her further if I were you.

Although I've posted that death certificate for you, it's not very clear, if you have the original could you please transcribe it on here for us.

12 Northumberland St, 1851, Joseph Garner Roberts, Broker, if that name has any relevance in your tree?

He had a Housekeeper, possibly Ann Bragger's position in 1854?

A name to note, 42 Northumberland Place, James Oliver and family, born, Worcester Rock?

Re Mary's request to transcribe death certificate

When died - 25th March 1854 12 Northumberland street
Name - Ann Bragger
********** - female
Age 40 years
Rank or profession - Widow of George Bragger Shipwright
Cause of Death - Phthisis Certified
Signature , Description and Residence of informant - The mark of Margaret Pownall Present at the death 12 Northumberland Street, Toxteth Park.
When registered - 27th March 1854

Interesting about Joseph Garner Roberts housekeeper Bertione but suspect it is not her. However we know now it was not the Pownalls living at 12 Northumberland Street in 1851. I think I found them in Garston but Ann Bragger was not with them.

We think Ann Bragger who married Ball was sister to George and it is heartening that our Ann Bragger still had strong contact with her second husband's friends and probably therefore his family in her later years, so we are very grateful for that "find" on the marriage certificate. We are still investigating the possible link between Pownalls/Bragger and Ball.

Thanks again for all the help and hope you are getting SOME sleep at night!

Not housekeeper in 1851 but perhaps later in 1854, Joseph Garner Roberts was still in Northumberland St, 1855, though not sure at which number, 1861 he was at 90.

I can never get my head around finding year on year of street directories on Ancestry, if anybody else can maybe they could figure out the order of the house numbers between the years in question - did he move from one to another, or did the numbering change? Maybe it's a job that needs to wait until we can check the microfilm at the library.

Both numbers are there in 1851 and 1861, so no renumbering. Difficult to work out where he was in 1855 from just the street name.

I think he may have had 27 also.
