Anfield Cemetery

Post by LukeJ »

Hello all
Happy new year

Just wondering about anfield cemetery.
I've checked the records and 3 of my ancestors were buried there. I have the section numbers and graves.
From 1869, 1910 & 1937.
Are these graves likely to still be standing?
Its highly unlikely they would be maintained by any one.

Cheers
LUKE

Hi, a lot depends on whether there was a headstone to start with, a lot of those originally installed at Anfield are still there but there is also a lot of open spaces, whether there were actually markers or not I don't know.

Have you checked this site http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~ormandy/ ... page2.html You may find an inscription

Yes that helps thank you. I've already found one transcription. I'll head up there to check them all properly.

I'm going to be a weirdo and take pictures of graves.
Normal to all of us obviously but not something Many people I know wouldn't get. 😂

You would be surprised, there is actually a Facebook Group just for Liverpool Gravestones. If you have any you'd like to share I'd be happy to post them for you, a transcription and if you had a little bio would help to go along with the photo.

So I cycled there today. Freezing cold.
I had 10 of my ancestors and just 2 of 10 have a headstone.
The other 8 just mounds of grass and mud!

One is a stone of my g. grandparents and a g. aunt who i hadn't traced before. With personal messages which is nice as
I don't know anything of these people.

Are the removed headstones inscriptions likely to be recorded anywhere when they were being removed?

I also have the same question for St. Mary's Cemetery ( now Lester Gdns.) which was demolished in 1893.

What a lovely clear picture of that stone. Do you want me to share it with the Liverpool Headstones Facebook Group? or do you use Facebook and do it yourself?

The only headstones I am aware of having been transcribed before removal were by James Gibson and I think they ended well before the advent of Anfield Cemetery. How do you know that there were headstones? Often our ancestors may not have been able to afford to erect a headstone, we are usually very lucky if we find any.

Yes Mary feel free to share it. Thanks.

I just assumed there would always be some kind of stone or cross there to mark the plot.
...and once in a while someone takes away the stones if they are damaged or neglected for years?
There are a lot of green patches so its hard to pinpoint the exact graves!

I had to count along a row of headstones and sort of measure spaces in between to calculate the numbers before I came across where my grandfather's grave would be in Anfield, so perhaps not always, which is a shame.

Sometimes you can get lucky. I know from my grandparents grave, that had no headstone, that you can sometimes find a sandstone brick with a number inscribed into it to mark where the head of the grave is.
