Monaghan/Scott marriage

Post by LOLLIPOP »

Hi
Was it common practice for parents to marry in a C of E Church such as Our Lady, St Nicholas and St Anne-John Monaghan and Mary Scott 1882

Yet have their children baptised in St Peter

I have found 1 other marriage for a John Monaghan and Mary Scott but that is in Bootle

I suppose it all boils down to where they were living at the time and which was the parish (or nearest) church. Some of my ancestors had some children baptised in one church and some in another.

Do you mean was it common for people to marry in a C of E church but to be RC and have their children christened in an RC church? If that's what you mean - I've come across it on many occasions, perhaps less questions were asked at the C of E church or one partner may not have been RC.

As regards the 2 possible marriages. The one at St Nicholas appears to have then had the following children christened at St Peter Seel St. Parents John Monaghan and Mary Scott

1887 John Benedict
1889 William
1891 Catherine
1895 Ann

The one at St James Bootle had the following children all christened at St James Bootle. Parents John Monaghan and Mary Ellen Scott

1894 Susannah Margaret
1895 Gertrude Ann
1898 Stephen Francis
1900 John Isaac

All the baptisms were taken from the www.liverpoolhistoryprojects.co.uk website

From the above you should be able to work out which is your couple and then hopefully the correct marriage.

There was also a certain prestige associated with marrying in the Parish Church, which was at one time or another either St Nick's or St Peters - not the RC one in Seel Street, but the one in Church Street, and I have certainly come across children being baptised in an RC church subsequently.

Hi

Thankyou Hilary for the information on the Bootle marriage
This now confirms that the my ancestors were the John and Mary whose children were the 4 you mentioned and who I have noted previously
I have noted also in the 1911 census that they had 6 children all together 4 lived and 2 have died. I think Ann died so there may be 2 more who lived
Also John is written down as MONGOHAN!

The 1882 marriage at St Nicholas, parents Patrick Monaghan, Blacksmith. Michael Scott, Labourer.

John Monaghan/Mary Scott, both born Liverpool.

1892 marriage, Bootle, St James is not online. I assume records will be at Liverpool records office.

Probable, although not all Bootle parishes are. I can check next week if it's important.
