Locating Post Office franchise

Post by JohnnyO »

Hi all, My wife's aunt was mentioning that one of the elusive Smith family was related to someone who ran a Post Office in Parkgate. Are there any records available giving details of names and dates that they ran the Post office?
Thanks, John

John,

I don't know of any records, try Neston Library or Cheshire Archives.

What year?

The address for Parkgate Post office, 1911, was The Parade, Parkgate. At that time it was between properties, Sea View house and Sunset House.

The 39 reg has Vincent Crook, Sunset House, Sub postmaster.

Perhaps you can fiddle through census and directories and get the names

You might also try the Post Office museum archives. A very quick search revealed that they hold some records about sub-postoffices (eg here) and so a more targeted search might turn up something relevant. Alternatively you could give them a call to see if they can suggest a better source.

Thanks both for your response. He died in 1951 but I have no other timescale. The only other thing is that the person's surname who ran the Post office was called Perry. I have a number in my tree but none I can link to.

He was working for a funeral parlour in the late 1930s in Eastham, so maybe it could have been around that period.

Will check through the suggested records, thanks.
