MARGARET (OWEN) WILLIAMS

Post by Richard Owen »

I have been able to trace here to 29a Aigburth Road Grassendale Liverpool in 1939
She was born 1873 in Llandegfan Anglesey
Married Alfred Finch Williams in 1903 at St Marys Walton on the Hill.
They moved to 18 Market St Ellesmere then to 6 Willow St Ellesmere
1920 moved to 29a Aigburth Road Grassendale
1939 records show her at that address but no record of Alfred Finch
Any information about either would be appreciated

I don't have access at the moment myself but have you tried the Liverpool Electoral Registers on Ancestry? (also available elsewhere) Kelly's 1938 Directory for Liverpool is also online.

The address doesn't appear in the 1938 directory, I can't find the address in the 39 register, 29a.

was she recorded as married or widowed?

The numbering of Aigburth Road originally started at the Cressington Park gates and increased towards Dingle, but changed at some point which I can’t trace.
29a sounds like a flat over a shop, probably between Cressington and Grassendale Road.

I agree this could have been a flat above one in a row of what might have been shops. If it is in this row it had disappeared by at least the 1950s. You can see this row on a c1927 map to the right of the Free Church. No numbers on these maps until the 1950s unfortunately. The 1950s map shows the Free Church building as number 21 Aigburth Road. Numbering may have changed at some point:-

The area on that map could not be described as Grassendale. I shall have a rummage tomorrow for #21a.

Hi Blue, D, and Bert
Thanks for all your help.
Margaret was married to Alfred Finch Williams and with an usual name like that there was both Alfred Finch Williams and Margaret Williams at 29a Aigburth in the 1920 voters list.
When I search on Ancestry.co.uk under his name I come up with them living in Elesmere in 1911. But have no information after 1920.
