Willoughby St, Edge Hill, Liverpool in 1901

Post by giltansley »

Hi - Current maps of Liverpool do not show a Willoughby St anywhere in Liverpool. I'm assuming that the area was redeveloped over the years and that the street no longer exists. Does anybody have access to street maps/directories for the turn of the 19th to 20th centuries?

Thanks

Gil

Hi Gil in sunny California and welcome :D .
The members are getting their beauty sleep!!

1894 Gores/Kellys Directory
has Willoughby St Edge Hill which ran from MacAuley St to Palmerston St with side streets, Forbes, Walpole, Pakington & Chalmers.

If you go to a modern map and look for Tunnel Rd, you will be in the right spot, to the left you will see Chatsworth St. It was a heavily built up area in the old days.
During the May blitz 41, trams stopped at Edge Hill and people had to walk the rest of the way, such was the damage.
I was born in the next suburb of Wavertree.

I'll see if I can find an old map.
Cheers

Woo Hoo...
Here's the link to British History Online Old Ordnance Survey Maps.
You will see Willoughby to the far right and the streets from previous post.

Tina & Mary: Thank you so much for your prompt and helpful response(s) to my request. My great grandfather had a pub in Willoughby St in 1901. I grew up in West Derby Road, near Ogdens.

Thanks again

Gil

I was born in Willoughby St. Lived there until 1965. The whole street was demolished in 1966.

Another map of the street. This one from the 1950s includes numbers so it helps to identify individual houses:-
