Why would a birth mother adopt her own child aged 14, child born out of wedlock, mother subsequently married but not to birth father. only mothers name on adoption cert. child born with mothers maiden name but known by her married name.
thinking could it be that the step dad didnt want to adopt and this was the only way to change the name to the family name.
is it possible to get details as to the reason a child is adopted, all parties now deceased.
adoption 1933
Re: adoption 1933
The child was born before the adoption act (1926) so any arrangements for anyone other than the mother to look after the child would have been informal.

From 1927 onwards an original birth register entry of a child who was later adopted would have a note to record this event added at a later date such as below:-

The mother may have gone to court to get the child back. Adoption certificates only contain the new details no mention of any previous arrangements. It will probably just mention the court and the date of the order. You could maybe contact Liverpool Record Office to see if there are any surviving court records that might provide more information.

Re: adoption 1933
thank you blue70
as far as we are aware the child was always with the mother, thats what so puzzling.
i have photos which show child amongst siblings. Dont have any early ones though.
child was born in 1919, birth mother married in 1923, then adopted own son in 1933.
i take your point though. interesting idea
