Desperation has set in.

Post by lynne99 »

Hi, I have asked for help about this before, but I wondered if with new info about if anything else might come to light, or if you had any other ideas.
My Great Grandmother known as Mary Jane Howard b c 1848 in Gascoyne Street Liverpool.
I would like to find her birth. Her mother was Elizabeth Cowley b 1816 and her father Richard Howard b 1819 both in Liverpool.
Her siblings;
1) William b 1836 christened St Peter's. Was on 1841 census in Pye place aged 5 (He was born before their marriage)
2) Joseph b 1838 also christened St Peter's and on the 1841 census.
3) Richard b 1840 ditto as above. He died 1842 bur. St Martin's in the field.
4) George b 1842. Baptised St Peter's as George, but registered with GRO as John (mmn Cowley) Why would this happen, did it happen with Mary Jane?
5) Sarah Ellen b 1846, cannot find a baptism. She was registered with GRO, as I have her certificate.
6) MARY JANE b c 1848/9 according to the 1851 census aged 2, at 60 Gascoyne St. No baptism found.
7) Margaret b 1851 Registered in GRO, but again no Baptism found.

All the registrations were in Liverpool.
I do know that George (John) married in a Catholic Church as did Joseph and their children were baptised Catholic. It might just be possible the girls were baptised Catholic??
I cannot understand why Mary Jane should be the only one not registered. Please any ideas will be really useful. Thanks

You can now search the indexes on the GRO website and look at the mothers' maiden names but nothing appears in the results that looks like Mary Jane:-

Back in 2014 you were going to send for the certificate in the way we suggested https://www.liverpool-genealogy.org.uk/ ... =2&t=14159
What was the result of the GRO search?

I have sent for several certificates but non fitted the criteria so they didn't send them. I wonder if she was registered with a different name, but I can't find any with mother Cowley in the correct time space. Might try Cawley!! I'll be back

Tried Cawley , no luck Tried using Phonetic similar , no luck then either. Will have to look for the girls christenings.

If it is any help Sarah Ellen was born on 13 Sep 1846 at Gascoyne Street.
I'm sure you are better at suggesting churches and finding records. Thanks

Hi Lynne

It looks like you used the no index information method in 2014 presumably the GRO said then they had nothing that matched so this means that the birth was not registered so you've come to the end of the line with this one.

I can't be any help I'm afraid ...Im with Blue on this one ..I searched for a long time and bought a few birth certificates for my grandmother and I don't think she was ever registered ...however one of the crew found that her christening along with her sisters was some 2 years after she was born...fortunately the vicar had written her birth date alongside the entry so I knew it was her. So maybe take a look a few years further on ...but you may have already done that :?:

Thank You Crew :)Ann

If you made the "no information" request a few years ago, I would have to agree that perhaps in this instance money might have been tight and they didn't afford the registration, by the time they felt able to afford it perhaps the thought of the additional fine for late registration made them unable to go ahead.

I have some of these frustrating voids in my tree Lynne you're best walking away from them when the information is clearly not there.
