Workhouse records

Post by Wren10 »

Hello
This is my first post, thank you for allowing me to join.
I would appreciate some advice as to how to follow up a birth certificate I have. It shows William Jones as having been born in Liverpool Workhouse on 14th September 1886. Mother is given as Ellen Jones but no father is recorded. Could anyone give me hints as to how to find out what caused the admission to the workhouse and when /if they were discharged from the workhouse.
My wife's family believes that William and his mother may have been separated shortly after birth but there is no concrete evidence for this.

Any help much appreciated.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

There are some Workhouse Records in the Liverpool Record Office, which you can contact via their online form.

I would suspect the birth certificate, missing a father's name, is a clue as to why Ellen was in there, it was often the first point of call to get medical attention when it wasn't afforded any other way.
