I know it's wrong....wrong....wrong to speculate BUT could his being away from home on the 1871 and 1881 census have anything to do with William (eldest son) taking on the name Williams as surname instead of Date!

Sorry Simone...Yes! The Widnes entry. All railway labourers too.
There's quite a bit of info on that name Penaluna...I googled it. Will give it some time later. There's just soooo much to follow up with names and places. You live and learn hey? (bit late for me though!)
