Thanks Bert. Most of my carters lived around Edge Hill, so no doubt they were kept very busy.
Talking of trains I was just reading a little local history book today that says this about our local train line, no Elf and Safety in them days obviously!!
"In order to speed up the movement of the trains along the line the company employed the use of slip coaches. Passengers for Grange would sit in the rear coach and as the train passed Holme Island the guard would release the pin holding the carriage to the rest of the train. As the train continued its journey to Ulverston, without stopping, the rear carriage would slowly come to a halt in the station."
Bert beat me to it. I'd just google it and found plenty on the cable hauled bit to get the carriages into Crown Street station. They used the same system to get the wagons down to the docks.
