Job definitions

Helping a friend ( also a society member) with her family. We are trying to establish whether a man who is rather naughty and in court described as a weight taker is the same man as described on his children's marriage certificates as a freight clerk.

He apparently forged requests for the delivery of goods and uttering them knowing they were forged with intent to defraud.

Does anyone know if the two occupations are similar?

I would believe them to be similar, both would be working on the docks and checking incoming cargo.

Back in the 1950's and no doubt earlier,I remember it was normal procedure, if you were sending freight by rail for example, that you presented your parcel or goods to the freight clerk who would weigh it on an old cast iron "stand on" Avery machine, he would then stamp up a ticket and enter its destination station,the whole thing would be entered in a register which had three carbon inserts and multi colored pages. One page would be stuck to the item and one given to the customer.
In short he was a "weight taker" and yes its the same job most likely.
It just sounds a bit more important and upmarket to be a "clerk"
Rather like a bin-man is now a "refuse disposal technician" or "Waste Manager"
