McGill Roger Abt. 1786-1849

He is my 3rd Gt Grandfather on the maternal line.

I have various records for him but something doesn't seem to fit. I have various spelling's of his surname, and sometimes he is Scottish and sometimes he is Irish. In the 1841 he is lodging with an Irish landlady who is an innkeeper. He is down as Irish as is the Landlady. On other records he seems to be Scottish. My instincts are saying that if the Innkeeper is Irish then she would know the difference between the accent so could other records implying he's Scottish be misunderstandings?

In 1828 I have Warehouse records for him 415 St. Georges Rd., I would like to progress this line further but my dilemma is the nationality.

His wife was Mary and they were living in Banastre St. which I believe at the time had a cholera epidemic.

Just a point on the accent. At the 1911 Irish census there were 962 'McGill's in Ireland. Nearly 200 - i.e. a concentration - were in County Antrim. Checking the areas, many were in north Antrim. Antrim is adjacent to Scotland. At the time you are researching, it was easier for the north Antrim people to travel to Scotland than to Belfast... so they did. And anyway; their ancestry was Scottish Presbyterian. So they sounded Scottish. Actually; they still sound Scottish today. I think you would be fooled. People living just a few miles away here can be fooled.

It could just be an enumerator error. I have someone on the 1871 Census who is recorded as being Irish yet he was definitely born in Liverpool to a non-Irish family.
