Family Weir - 1858 - Breck Rd Liverpool - Luirrgy?

Post by jacqui63m »

I am trying to find out anything about my family Weir who lived in Liverpool 1858.
Old family letters talk about living on Breck Road and mention the Luirrgy (writing hard to decipher)
Can anyone tell me about 1850's Breck Rd and what the Luirrgy may have been?
Has anyone access to 1850's records that may tell me something about the family?
Hannah Weir; her sons William, Richard, Robert and Arthur; her daughters Hannah, Jane, Ellen, Maria & Sarah
Coming from Sligo/Dublin (Ire), I know this was a short term stay. They left Liverpool 1858 for Dublin (Ire)
Thanks
Jacqui

Do you know an approx. date of birth for her? As that would be very useful.

Is there any chance you could scan a portion of the letter with this word on it? and post it on here for us to see. Instructions to post an image are given here https://www.liverpool-genealogy.org.uk/ ... =16&t=9817

Hi. Despite many attempts at moving the copy print across to photobucket, I keep getting a message saying the following file was not uploaded. Argh, frustrating

It is not yet known if Hannah (a widow since 1842) and her family left Sligo for Dublin and then Liverpool or went straight to Liverpool from Sligo. I know that some of Hannah's children went to school in England. Was that Liverpool, I don't know. Hannah's son William entered a 5 yr apprenticeship (medical field), beginning 7 Nov 1853. I always assumed that this was in Ireland but it could well have been Liverpool being as the family were here at that time.

The family details are:
Mother: Hannah (Phibbs) Weir born c1798 Sligo Ire (Her husband Robert Lewis Weir died 1842 Sligo)
Her sons:
Robert George Weir born 1828 Sligo Ire
William Ormsby Weir born 1836 Sligo Ire (my 2xgt grandfather)
Richard Phibbs Weir born c1837 Sligo Ire
Arthur Cooper Weir born c1838 Sligo/Dublin Ire

Her daughters:
Hannah Phibbs (nee Weir) Allen born 1821 Sligo Ire
Ellen Jane (nee Weir) Pearson born 1822 Sligo Ire
Maria Irwin Weir born 1824 Sligo Ire
Jane Weir born 1826 Sligo Ire
Sarah Irwin Weir born 1832 Sligo Ire
Margaret Ann Weir born c1835 Sligo Ire

Does this help any?
Thanks again for all your help

In the 1851 census, Maria I Weir aged 25 and Margaret A Weir aged 17, both from Sligo, are boarders at a private school in Brigg Road, Barton upon Humber. Lincolnshire, run by Mrs Frances Ping.

What is the context in which the word "Luirrgy" is used in the letters?

The National Archives has civil service "evidence of age" documents for Arthur Cooper Weir, certified by Hannah Weir in 1862 and including a baptismal certificate. He was born 11 November 1842, baptised at St John's on 23 December. This is also available on FMP.

Thank you so much for this. I am delighted.

The context doesn't really help, Im afraid:
"......... that other people remember the days and scenes and all the kind friends of long ago. The good old times at Luirggy House before hardships were yet even dreamed of"

"....... I remember the time long ago when Eddy and Arthur Weir used to sit in justice over me who was always the culprit at the house in the Luirggy. Now I have to go through the form in earnest. I have plenty of court work here and have, as I said, only just be settling accounts with some the evil doers"

As part of the letter is missing, the author is unknown. Dated 1882, he is writing to William Weir and recounting stories of 1858 in Liverpool. Writing from Matang Larut, the impression i get is that the writer is involved in the legal system - lawyer, judge maybe

Again, many thanks

The 1846 Slater's National Commercial Directory of Ireland lists in the Sligo section: "Weir, Mrs Hannah, Lungy"

As much as I am thrilled with this information, I am slightly embarrassed too. All this time I have believed it Liverpool (placing all my efforts and concentration there) and yet it was in their home town of Sligo.

I can't thank you enough for all of this. Thank you.

Should you discover any more on the family, particularly in Liverpool, please let me know.

Kindest regards
Jacqui

Possibly the writer was the District Officer for Matang & Larut, or an Assistant District Officer.

Well done retiringtype! I was going to check some of the directories in the New Year to see if anything popped up, but you have cracked it.

Jacqui there is also a Thoms Directory in Ireland, unfortunately I don't have a copy of it, but you may be able to access it at your library, it will be similar and may give you occupations and addresses of the family.

A quick line to thank everyone for all their help. I am thrilled with it all.

May I ask 'retiringtype' the evidence of age document regarding Arthur Weir - are there any more details or possibly let me know exactly what it says?

Again thank you

The 1862 evidence of age documents are interesting because they have the original signature of Hannah Weir and a certified baptismal certificate for ACW but there isn't much more information than I have already given. Looking at these documents again I see that they include a second certification in 1865, with an address for Hannah of 17 Lr Larkhill St, Dublin.

You probably already know that Arthur Cooper Weir was duly appointed to the Civil Service in 1862 as a temporary clerk in the Census Office, and in 1865 as a temporary clerk in the Post Office Savings Bank. https://goo.gl/uoHyyX
