I think I have just found my g.g. grandmother's sister in the Liverpool Workhouse at Brownlow Hill in the 1901 census.
Would there be any kind of admission records held at a record office or where people just heads to be counted? How long was it normal to stay there? How did people get out and move on from those circumstances?

Just so that you know for future reference, yes there are Workhouse records for West Derby, Liverpool and Toxteth Park, usually including Admission and Discharge Records.
